Dogs, goats and donkeys: Krewe of Wag-uns brings the fun

It is just not Mardi Gras in Natchitoches until the Krewe of Wag-uns parade rolls! The long-standing local tradition, now sponsored by FAUNA (Friends All United for Natchitoches Animals), rolled on Feb. 15 in downtown Natchitoches, prior to the Krewe of Dionysos parade. This year’s parade featured beads, trinkets and family fun for all ages.

Over 50 animals, many in Mardi Gras themed costumes, joined their owners in a parade down Front Street that ended at the riverbank stage. They were joined by McGruff the Crime Dog, BOM’s Monty the Owl and the fire department’s ASH the Alligator. The mascots engaged in a spirited dance-off with McGruff the Crime Dog emerging as the crowd favorite. Queen Mutt-a-Gras and King Rex Rufus were crowned, and prizes awarded in such categories as best float and best costume.
