NSU SPRING SPORTS: Highlights across the board, records fall in track

Northwestern State’s spring sports weekend included highlights from the softball, track and field and tennis teams.

SOFTBALL: A remarkable 9-8 comeback victory Friday over Georgia State in Youngsville highlighted a 2-3 weekend for the Lady Demons at the Mardi Gras Mambo three-day tournament in Youngsville.

NSU overcame an 8-1 deficit in the final two innings to beat Georgia State on a walk-off RBI single by Brynn Daiel following a six-run sixth inning comeback. The team’s other win came Saturday when junior transfer Mattison Bustter threw a complete game in a 4-0 decision over Eastern Illinois, striking out six and retiring 11 of the last 12 batters she faced.

After dropping opening games Friday (5-0 to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) and Saturday (6-4 to New Mexico), the Lady Demons fell 9-1 Sunday to St. Thomas (Minn.) when the winners drew seven walks in a 7-run third inning.

The team (3-8) goes to Louisiana Tech Tuesday, then is on the road in tournament play for the third straight weekend.

TRACK & FIELD:  At Texas Tech Friday and Saturday in their last competition prior to the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 25-26 in Birmingham, Northwestern’s men and women altered record books.

Friday in Lubbock at the Jarvis Scott Invite,  Will Achee lowered the men’s 400 meter dash school indoor record for the second time in three meets this year. He posted a 46.48 to better his month-old mark by 0.36.

Saturday, the Lady Demons sprinters ran a Southland Conference all-time best in the women’s 4×400 relay, a 3:32.47 clocking by Margaret Coteh, Rushana Dwyer, Kahliyah Anderson and Dhakiya Blake. Only host Texas Tech outran the NSU women.

TENNIS:  The defending Southland Conference champion Lady Demons posted a solid 5-2 victory over Tyler Junior College Friday and will wrap up a homestand next Friday and Sunday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
