ABBEVILLE – The St. Mary’s Tigers baseball team finally takes the field in the state playoffs today, visiting defending state champion Vermilion Catholic in a regional round Select Division IV contest.
First pitch is 6 o’clock between the ninth-seeded Tigers (15-9) and the No. 8 Eagles (15-10) at Ralph Sellers Field in Abbeville.
Both teams drew first-round byes in the bracket. The winner of today’s game advances to the quarterfinals for a matchup against either top-seeded Opelousas Catholic or No. 16 Central Catholic of Morgan City.
St. Mary’s, undefeated in District 3-1A competition, hasn’t played a game since April 13. The playoff brackets in Division IV, along with Classes B and C, are slower to unfold because not as many teams qualify for the postseason and the games in these divisions are single-elimination leading into the state tournaments.
