Shaping student lives: A dean’s story

Northwestern State University’s Department of New Media, Journalism and Communication Arts is highlighting the leadership and service of Reatha Cox, vice president of Student Experience and dean of Students, through a feature on The Current Sauce podcast.

The episode explores Cox’s journey from a first-generation college student at Northwestern State to a longtime university leader. During her time as a student, she developed mentorships with former Dean of the Graduate School Dr. Mildred Bailey and former Dean of Women Lucile Hendrick, relationships that helped shape her leadership approach.

Cox has served nearly five years as Dean of Students and has worked at the university for 38 years. Throughout her career, she has supported students during key moments, including the transition back to campus following the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her role as vice president for the Student Experience, Cox oversees student life initiatives and support services aimed at helping students succeed academically and personally. She encourages involvement in campus organizations and the use of resources such as counseling and career services while building connections within the campus community.

Cox’s leadership approach emphasizes service, compassion and listening to students. She also highlights mentorship as an important factor in student success and encourages students to seek guidance and find opportunities to connect and grow during their time at the university.
