Your Community Garden celebrates its first harvest

Natchitoches brothers Edward and Hiram Phillips saw a need in their community and decided to act on it. They saw the potential in an empty field on North St. where they used to play football after school as well as a way to honor their brother, the late Lawrence Phillips.

After some hard work by the brothers and community volunteers, that field is now Your Community Garden and is producing a bumper crop of vegetables such as zucchini, squash, tomatoes, peppers, okra and purple hulled peas, all of which will be donated to Trinity Episcopal Church’s food pantry. Stine’s Lumber also donated citrus plants which will be ready for harvest later in the season.

The hard work of the Phillips brothers came to fruition on Saturday, June 13 as they and a group of volunteers began Your Community Garden’s first harvest. Their efforts produced several baskets of various vegetables with more on the way as different crops mature. Your Community Garden is a fitting tribute to the late Mr. Lawrence Phillips and is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together in order to do good.
