Boil advisory issued for portions of downtown Natchitoches following water line work

The City of Natchitoches Water System issued a boil advisory June 24 for several streets in the downtown area following a temporary water outage caused by utility construction work.

The advisory affects Second Street from Church Street to Touline Street, the entirety of Trudeau Street, Church Street from Second Street to Third Street, and Front Street from Church Street to Touline Street.

City officials said contractors disconnected existing water lines and connected new water lines, causing water pressure in the affected area to drop below 20 pounds per square inch. The pressure loss resulted in water being considered of questionable microbiological quality.

Residents and businesses in the affected area are advised to disinfect water before consuming it, making ice, brushing teeth, preparing food, rinsing food or using fountain drink machines.

To disinfect water, consumers should bring water to a rolling boil in a clean container and continue boiling for one full minute. The one-minute period begins after the water reaches a rolling boil.

The boil advisory will remain in effect until it is rescinded by the City of Natchitoches Water System.

The remainder of the City of Natchitoches Water Distribution System is not affected by the advisory.
