The top arms from Northwestern State’s Southland Conference-leading pitching staff collected one final postseason honor Saturday.
Junior right-hander Dylan Marionneaux and freshman left-hander Brody Trosclair both were named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Baseball Team, earning second-team honors. The team is selected by a panel of state baseball sports information directors and media members.
Both players won’t remain at NSU. Marionneaux was drafted by the Chicago Cubs Saturday afternoon, and his Round 4 selection will likely result in him turning pro instead of a previously announced transfer to Alabama. Trosclair has already transferred to Tennessee. NIL packages were pivotal factors in those decisions.
Marionneaux, a Zachary native, was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection after leading the conference in innings pitched and ranking in the top 100 nationally in complete games (T-15th), walks per nine innings (48th, 1.91) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (49th, 4.5). Marionneaux went 4-2 with a 3.51 ERA, finishing the regular season by allowing only two earned runs across his final 38 2-3 innings.
Trosclair earned Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Southland Conference honors in just 10 appearances.
A Thibodaux native, Trosclair struck out 55 batters in 38 innings, while posting a 5-1 record and a 1.89 ERA.
He was named a Perfect Game Midseason Freshman All-American and was part of Baseball America’s Midseason Freshman of the Year Award watch list. Trosclair started his career with 13 shutout innings and did not allow an earned run in the first 14 1-3 innings of his career.
He fanned 12 New Orleans hitters – the most by a Demon pitcher in nearly three years – against New Orleans on March 20 and went 3-1 after moving into the starting rotation on March 13.
He was shut down for the season and had surgery before taking advantage of NIL money and the transfer portal, visiting many Southeastern Conference schools before settling on Tennessee.
Former NSU assistant coach Matt Deggs, who was on Dave Van Horn’s Demon staff in 1996-97, was voted co-coach of the year after leading UL Lafayette to an NCAA regional appearance.
