Volunteers clean overgrown corner near NSU to promote community pride

A group of local volunteers recently spent part of a Saturday morning, July 11, clearing an overgrown corner at Jefferson Street and University Parkway near the Northwestern State University campus.

According to organizer Crit Williams, the effort was inspired by what he described as “middle sized” problems — issues or eyesores that may not be large enough for the city to address immediately but are too much for one person to tackle alone.

Williams said the cleanup was the first community project organized by a small group of local residents who wanted to make a visible difference in Natchitoches.

The volunteers included Christian James, Kaleb Edwards, Adam Edwards, John Cunningham, Jacob Murchison and Billy Clemons. During the cleanup, the group wore matching T-shirts featuring “Love Locally” with a heart on the front and “I ♥ Natchitoches” on the back.

The project was not part of a formal program and did not involve sponsors.

Williams said the group’s goal was to help improve the appearance of the city and encourage civic pride by addressing areas in need through volunteer service.

He added that the group hopes to continue organizing future projects, which could include additional cleanups, helping local business owners or assisting families in need.

Residents interested in participating in future volunteer efforts are encouraged to contact Williams.
