The Cane River Waterway Commission issued a public notice on July 20, 2026 reminding residents of the dangers of feeding alligators.

When an alligator is fed by people, it begins to associate humans with food. This can cause the animal to approach people expecting to be fed, creating a dangerous situation.

Residents should consider the risk of a person floating on a tube or playing in the water without food while an alligator has learned to associate people with feeding.

Residents are also asked to avoid throwing food scraps or fish remains into the water or from docks. Doing so encourages alligators to return to those areas looking for food and increases the likelihood of dangerous encounters.

Help protect families, neighbors and wildlife by never feeding alligators and by not leaving food or animal remains near the water. Help keep Cane River safe for everyone.
