Demon Soccer Rallies From Two Down to Beat Louisiana Tech 5-2

Northwestern State scored five unanswered goals to beat Louisiana Tech 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Demon Soccer Complex, winning its home opener after opening the season with five straight road games. The Bulldogs scored twice within 24 seconds to lead 2-0 in the 18th minute before the Demons answered. Seniors accounted for three of the five goals, including two from Paige Baumgartner, who scored in both of the team’s matches last week. Northwestern State recorded 30 shot attempts, its most since last season’s win over Prairie View A&M. NSU improved to 1-5; Louisiana Tech fell to 2-4-1. Head coach Ian Brophy credited the team’s resilience in erasing the early deficit. The Demons host Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
NSU Family Day Returns Sept. 25-26

Northwestern State University will host Family Day 2026 on Sept. 25-26, with much of Saturday’s schedule built around the NSU Tailgate Field ahead of the 6 p.m. football game against Southeastern Louisiana at Turpin Stadium. Friday activities include golf at Northwestern Hills Golf Course, a guided walking tour of the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District and a Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band practice at Turpin Stadium. The Natchitoches Parish Rodeo also runs Sept. 25-26. Saturday opens with golf and downtown events including R&B on the River, a walking tour, shopping and dining. Check-in begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at Family Day Headquarters on the east side of the Tailgate Field behind Turpin Stadium, where families pick up picnic tickets, game tickets and T-shirts. The Family Tailgate Party begins at 2:30 p.m. with music, games and contests, followed by a picnic from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and a pregame pep rally. Individual meal tickets are $10. The event is hosted by First Year Experience.
Child Welfare Symposium Set for Oct. 7 at NSU

Northwestern State University will host the Louisiana Title IV-E Child Welfare Symposium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Friedman Student Union Ballroom. The event, themed “Partners in Purpose,” brings together child welfare professionals, students, community partners and other stakeholders, and will recognize individuals working in the field. It is intended for DCFS staff, social workers, licensed professional counselors, foster care and adoption professionals, CASA volunteers, law enforcement, behavioral health providers and students. Attendees can earn up to four continuing education units. Sponsorships are available at the diamond, gold, silver and bronze levels, along with in-kind donations. Fly Tying Demonstration Set for Sept. 19 at Sports Hall of Fame

The ArkLaTexOma Fly Tyers will hold Flies and Pies, a fly tying demonstration, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum. Members of the four-state organization will demonstrate the craft and discuss techniques and materials used to make hand-tied fishing flies. The event coincides with the Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival. All museum tickets are $1 off for the duration of the event. Information is available at 318-357-2492.
ROAD CLOSURE: U.S. 84 at Bourbeaux Bayou
Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development
U.S. 84 over Bourbeaux Bayou, just east of the Village of Clarence, remains closed until further notice. DOTD said the condition and size of the box culvert require the roadway to stay closed for the safety of the traveling public. The department is developing a contract and seeking emergency funding to allow a contractor to replace the existing culvert with a new structure. No-truck signs have been posted on LA 1226. Motorists should prepare for an ongoing closure and detour.
