To the Editor

When I was a child, I loved the library. It was always there, open and welcoming, just at the end of the short bicycle ride. There was a wonderful world inside: books, magazines, newspapers, that seemed to have the answers to everything I wanted to know.

Within was the even more wonderful world of people who guided me from one book, and one idea, to the next. There were people who shared my interests, and opportunities to know and to grow in the company of people also drawn to the wonders of books and ideas.

Information has become more available, and acquiring it is certainly different from the way it was then. However, the nature and importance of community and sharing ideas has, if anything, become even more important.

One of the great blessings of our city is our public library.  Pacesetting in acquiring, presenting, and disseminating information, it retains an inspired vision of learning and sharing among all members of the community, and throughout the lifespan.

This is Library Card sign-up month.  Please get and frequently use this free, infinitely invaluable resource. It is a gift that we give to each other a gift we give to ourselves.
