Friday night, Sept. 11, could have some very positive memories for the Lakeview Gators football team.
The Gators are trying to get off a dubious list – the longest active losing streaks in Louisiana high school football.
Lakeview has dropped its last 28 games, third on the list. Friday the Gators travel north to Plain Dealing to take on the Lions, who have the state’s longest skid, 45 straight losses.
Lakeview scored 13 points in its opener last week at LaSalle, but could not find a way to slow down the Tigers, who rang up 54.
Plain Dealing was blanked 38-0 in its Week 1 game last week at Lakeview’s District 3-1A rival, Northwood-Lena.
The other parish 3-1A team, the Tigers of St. Mary’s, opened impressively with a 22-6 victory at home last Thursday over Class 2A Vidalia. St. Mary’s will play another 2A foe Friday night, heading up the road to Coushatta to meet Red River.
The Bulldogs were blasted 49-12 in their first game at 4A power Tioga last week.
St. Mary’s gave new coach Jacob Carruth his first win with the Tigers. He was proud of his team’s toughness against a much-improved Vikings team, but was frustrated by failures to convert trips into Vidalia’s red zone.
Gavin Solomon scored on an 85-yard interception return and threw a St. Mary’s touchdown pass of 40 yards to Dennis Morgan. The Tigers’ defense also scored on a safety. Quarterback Preston Tilley had a 2-yard TD run.
