Trinity Episcopal’s  2026 Red Mass continues a century’s long tradition

Natchitoches’ Trinity Episcopal Church hosted the 2026 Red Mass on Oct. 9. The Red Mass is part of a tradition that stretches back to Medieval Europe in which judges and lawyers would attend and ask God’s guidance. The term “Red Mass” derives from the color of the vestments worn by the priest as well as the bright scarlet robes worn by the English High Justices.

This year’s service was well attended by local judges and attorneys as well as police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firemen and emergency medical personnel. As part of the service, a representative from the Natchitoches Fire & Police Departments, Sheriff’s office, State Police and City Marshal brought their hats forward to be blessed. The event concluded with a reception in the parish hall.
