The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Friday, October 16, warning that gusty winds, low humidity, and critically dry vegetation could create dangerous wildfire conditions across portions of Louisiana and neighboring states.
The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office shared the advisory Wednesday, October 14, reminding residents that a burn ban remains in effect throughout Natchitoches Parish.
The Fire Weather Watch will be in effect from Friday morning through late Friday night.
According to the National Weather Service, north to northwest winds are expected to reach 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Minimum relative humidity levels are forecast to range between 25 and 45 percent.
Combined with critically dry vegetation and other combustible materials, these conditions could allow fires to ignite and spread rapidly.
The watch covers portions of north-central and northwest Louisiana, south-central and southwest Arkansas, southeast Oklahoma, and east and northeast Texas.
A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. It does not necessarily mean a wildfire is occurring, but the combination of dry fuels, wind, and low humidity could significantly increase the risk of rapidly spreading fires.
The National Weather Service specifically warned that any fires developing under these conditions could spread quickly and advised against outdoor burning.
For Natchitoches Parish residents, the warning comes as an existing burn ban remains in place.
Residents are reminded to comply with the burn ban and avoid activities that could ignite dry grass, brush, or other vegetation.
Motorists and property owners should also exercise caution with equipment, vehicles, and other potential ignition sources, particularly during periods of stronger winds.
The Fire Weather Watch comes ahead of a forecast cooldown expected to bring lower temperatures to the region over the weekend. However, cooler temperatures alone do not eliminate wildfire concerns when vegetation remains dry and winds are elevated.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency officials as Friday approaches.
The burn ban remains in effect for Natchitoches Parish, and outdoor burning is not recommended under the forecast conditions.
