The St. Mary’s Tigers have finally gotten some traction in the Week 9 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A Top 10 voting.
After their latest victory, a blowout of Lakeview, the 7-1 Tigers moved in range of the Top 10, earning eight points in voting from 10 LSWA members around the state. That jumped them up to what is effectively 12th in the poll, two slots away from breaking into the Top 10.
Voting points are awarded inversely to how a voter ranks the team. A first-place rank earns 10 points, and a 10th place vote earns 1. So it appears that several voters have finally taken notice of St. Mary’s remarkable performance this season, with the only blemish a one-point loss on the last play against 10th-ranked Logansport. The Tigers’ first five wins all came against higher-classification teams.
SMHS has two games remaining in the regular-season schedule, Friday at Ringgold and Nov. 6 at home in Turpin Stadium against Montgomery.
