Natchitoches Parish Clerk of Court reflects on Election Day

For the voting public, elections are very emotional. I know, I’ve been a candidate. For the Natchitoches Parish Clerk of Court’s office, it is a journey where we have to separate personal feelings to do an important task. That is to deliver fair and accurate elections.

I think we do it time and time again.

Where do I start? First with a word of thanks. I’m thankful for the Louisiana election process. No, it’s not perfect but I truly believe that the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office helps us deliver fair and accurate results. It doesn’t happen without the people of that department and their hard work and knowledge of the process and equipment. They work hard and smart!

Next, I love to quote my predecessor and friend Louie Bernard when he said the Election Commissioners are the unsung heroes of the election system. What a long day they served yesterday! I’m sure they will tell you that it’s not about the money. Yes, they will cash their checks, as meager as they are, but they believe in service to their community. They make a difference. Thanks! I appreciate the personal relationships that I have developed across the parish with you guys.

To the candidates, thanks for putting yourself out there. You make America great at every level. We have an excellent system that you are an important part of. We also appreciate the voters for a solid turnout.

There is a lot more, but for now, I’ll finish with thanks to our staff at the Natchitoches Parish Clerk of Court. Elections are a small part of our job, but so public and highly important. I’m tired and know you are also but we will be at work this morning. I’ve got a Grand Jury to help impanel at 9:00. Others will be processing checks for payment of yesterday’s work. We all will be right back at our regular work getting the job of the office done after a 12 to 15 hour Election Day schedule. You guys are unsung but greatly appreciated for your dedication to the office and the public.

The election still has to be finished up, certified, determine runoffs, etc. I will do my best to keep you informed.

Have a wonderful day!
David Stamey, Natchitoches Parish Clerk of Court
