More than 30 NSU theatre students working in summer professional productions

More than 30 Northwestern State University theatre and dance students are working throughout the United States in professional theatre and dance jobs this summer. The students are working for 15 different companies or facilities in 11 states in a variety of performing, technical and business-related roles.

“One of the things I always here from prospective students and parents is how will anyone succeed in this industry? Isn’t it very competitive? Should I plan for a backup and pick up another major or minor?” said Brett Garfinkel, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Northwestern State. “The wonderful thing about the Theatre & Dance Department is that regardless of the student’s passion and specialty we at NSU prepare our students for the professional world.”

Garfinkel said several professional companies come to NSU annually to audition students. He said students also submit, audition and attend the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) that allows them to audition for over 50 companies looking to hire talent for summer or for year-round employment. Approximately 35 current students or alumni have worked at Cedar Point Amusement Parks in Sandusky, Ohio, over the last two years. The amusement park hires over 300 performers and technicians for the whole summer.

“Many students received multiple offers and had to make the decision that would be best for them,” said Garfinkel. “I am so proud to see out students get professional while work while still in school and then of course after they graduate.”

Free, from 5-7 this evening: food, drinks, music, sports stars, Billy Cannon’s Heisman

There’s an extra guest this evening in downtown Natchitoches at the La Capitol Welcome Reception kicking off the 2022 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Celebration .

You can be right there, free of charge — no need to dress fancy, just come comfy and enjoy food and refreshments and music and a world-class museum, mingling with sports stars from 5-7 today.

Adding to the excitement of the arrival of the nine living inductees and families representing three deceased 2022 honorees (LSU football’s Eric Andolsek, 1932 Olympic gold medal boxer Eddie Flynn and McNeese/UL baseball coach Tony Robichaux): you can see one of Louisiana’s most prized sports trophies, now on display inside the LSHOF museum at 800 Front Street (at the traffic circle).

Billy Cannon’s 1959 Heisman Trophy is here through the weekend festivities, courtesy of the Cannon Trust, as a preview of the museum’s soon to open Heisman Trophy exhibit that will showcase the state’s four winners: Cannon, John David Crow (1957), Joe Burrow (2019) and DeVonta Smith (2020).

But today’s focus falls on the Class of 2022, headlined by six-time Pro Bowl NFL stars Jahri Evans (Saints) and Kyle Williams (LSU, Bills).

On the 50th anniversary (today) of the adoption of Title IX, which has vastly improved opportunities for women in sports, two female LSU All-Americans are in this class: three-time national champion and 12-time AA gymnast Susan Jackson and four-time All-SEC, two-time AA softball pitcher Britni Sneed Williams.

Steve Duhon, who is in the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and the Cowboy Hall of Fame, becomes the second rodeo cowboy to enter the Hall. The first – 97-year-old T. Berry Porter, a 2019 inductee – will be on hand Saturday evening at the Induction Ceremony amid a crowd approaching 700 people.

Claney Duplechin, whose teams at Episcopal High in Baton Rouge have won an amazing 64 state cross country and track state championships in his still-active 47-year career, is bringing a horde of supporters with him to the weekend festivities.

Administrator Jay Cicero, a Shreveport native, and sports journalists Teddy Allen and Garland Forman have won the contributor awards for 2022 and will be enshrined this weekend.

You’re invited to all the fun. Visit LaSportsHall.com to get more information and the schedule of events, and call 318-332-8539 for participation opportunities for ticketed events.

Lady Demons Bolden, Parramore named to All-Louisiana team

Northwestern State women’s basketball’s Monette Bolden and Candice Parramore each received honorable mention nods to the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association’s All-Louisiana team on Wednesday.

The Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, Parramore led the Lady Demons in scoring and finished in the top five the conference in average and points this season. She had one of the best free throw shooting seasons in program history converting on 90 percent (140-of-157) of her shots from the stripe, the fifth best percentage all time and the highest by a player with more than 100 attempts. She made 34 consecutive free throws at one point over a 10-game stretch.

Parramore put in an average of 13.8 points per game and led the team in scoring in 16 of the 26 total games and reached the 20-point mark seven different times on the year.

She earned a second-team all-conference spot in her first season NSU and was named conference player of the week two times.

Bolden was the team leader in assists at 3.1 per game and finished second in both scoring (11.8) and rebounds (5.7).

She reached double-digits a team-best 19 times and on four different occasions scored 10 or more points with five or more rebounds and five or more assists, two coming in conference play. She was named a third-team all-conference player and earned Southland Player of the Week honors once.

Gabe Firment: 2022 Regular Session Recap

It’s been a busy few months for the state legislature, with a regular session, two special sessions, and a veto session having occurred since February 1st. We recently concluded the second special session of the year that was called by Governor Edwards in response to a ruling by a federal district court judge to re-draw our congressional boundary maps to include two majority minority districts. However, the Legislature adjourned without approving any new congressional maps, and the matter will ultimately be settled by the courts. Now that I have escaped the traffic and concrete jungle that is Baton Rouge and returned to the piney woods of District 22, I have finally found the time to recap the most significant accomplishments and disappointments of the 2022 Regular Legislative Session that adjourned June 6th.

There is little doubt that this session will be remembered primarily for the historic investments in education and infrastructure, fueled in part by the influx of federal pandemic aid that flowed into the state coffers.  House Bill 2, the capital outlay budget, included over $50 million of funding commitments to Northwestern State University for the replacement of Kyser Hall, the construction of a Health Performance Center, and the renovation of Roy Hall. The Legislature also provided K-12 public school teachers with a $1,500 annual pay raise, and support staff with a pay increase of $750 yearly.  Higher education was a huge priority, with record investments made for faculty pay raises, building maintenance, and tuition assistance.

District 22 has already benefited greatly from legislation passed in 2021 that established the Water Sector Program and the GUMBO Grant program to address critical water and sewer needs, and to expand access to affordable and reliable high speed internet throughout rural Louisiana. The 2022 budget includes a $450 million allocation to the Water Sector Program to shore up debilitated water and sewer systems, and $90 million to GUMBO for rural broadband. With the federal government recently announcing that Louisiana will receive an additional $176.7 million for rural broadband, we are well on our way to bridging the digital divide that has held back so much of our state that does not currently have access to high speed internet.

Other important investments made by the Legislature include $500 million to shore up the Unemployment Trust Fund depleted during covid, $175 million to the state’s Rainy Day Fund, $70 million towards state pension plan retirement debt, over $100 million towards highway preservation, and several hundred million for mega-projects such as new bridges in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles.  Perhaps most importantly, the Legislature made all of these important investments without raising taxes or creating recurring expenditures with this one-time influx of funds. However, I was disappointed that we were not able to take even modest steps to prepare for the decrease in revenue that we know will occur when the $.45 sales tax expires in 2025 and when vehicle sales tax revenue begins flowing to fund roads and bridges instead of into the state general fund. The House of Representatives passed legislation to begin phasing out the $.45 sales tax and return surplus funds to the taxpayers, but the bill was killed by the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs committee.

The Legislature overwhelmingly passed SB44 by Sen. Beth Mizell – the Fairness in Women’s Sports Bill – that simply prohibits biological males from participating in girls and women’s sports. Governor Edwards vetoed the bill last year, but he decided to allow the bill to become law this year by taking no action to sign or veto the legislation. We easily passed two bills – SB342 by Sen. Katrina Jackson and SB388 by Sen. Sharon Hewitt – that position Louisiana as the most pro-life state in the nation in anticipation of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe vs. Wade in the coming weeks. Gov. Edwards has been consistently pro-life throughout his time in office, and I expect him to sign both of these bills.

I was disappointed that several legislative instruments the House of Representatives passed to the state Senate failed to progress, including HB37 that would have affirmed our constitutional right to carry a concealed firearm; HB811(“Zuckerbucks Bill”) that would have prohibited the use of private funds for use in elections; HB47 that would have required Louisiana schools to inform students and parents about exemptions from school immunizations; and the aforementioned HB438 that would have phased out the $.45 sales tax and returned hard-earned money to taxpayers. Despite these disappointments, I still feel that the regular session was a success and we laid the groundwork for passing more common sense legislation in the future.

It is a pleasure to serve you as District 22 state representative, and I encourage anyone who may have a question about legislation or any other issue to contact me at (318)765-9606, (318)201-6769, or at gfirment@legis.la.gov. Thank you and God Bless.

‘When all the leaves and trees are green…’

Welcome to summertime, which began Tuesday with the summer “solstice,” a Latin word for “if our AC goes out, call 911.”

So if Tuesday seemed like a really long day … it was. The longest. Because of the way the Earth and Sun were situated — with the Earth tilting on one of its poles and other complicated astronomical stuff that you already know so why should I explain — Tuesday was the longest day and shortest night of the year.

If you are married and came home and said, “Honey, it’s been a long day,” you might have been figuratively correct but you were most definitely literally correct. In other words, for once in your marriage, you were right, even if you didn’t mean to be.

Another reason why summer is good.

Song after song has been written and sung about summertime.

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…”

“In the good ol’ summertime…”

“The summer wind/came blowin’ in/from across the sea/It lingered there/to touch your hair/and walk with me…”

“We’ve been havin’ fun all summer long…” – Beach Boys, of course.

And — also of course — the late, great Roger Miller wrote this, a favorite because, well, Roger Miller …

“In the summertime

When all the leaves and trees are green

And the redbird sings ‘I’ll be blue

’Cause you don’t want my love…”

Clever Roger Miller with the colors, green and red and blue. But it’s a sad summer song, and sad is not what summer is about.

It’s complicated now, when school starts and when school stops. Makes no sense.

But in a simpler time, the school system owned our adolescent butts from Labor Day until Memorial Day. Owned us. That was understood. Two days for Thanksgiving. Christmas was a couple weeks, the Glory Days of Wintertime Kiddom. There was an Easter Day or two. Maybe a Presidents Day.

But basically, they had you where they wanted you. In front of a chalkboard. Labor Day until Memorial Day.

Fine.

But we knew that glorious summertime was ours. Memorial Day passed, and we were free to run barefoot for three months. No questions asked.

We worked, sure. Depending on where you grew up, there was grass to cut, tractors to drive.

But there was also baseball to play. Afternoons at the pool. Bikes to ride from daylight to dusk.

Watermelon and sweat and smiles. And you could go to bed Sunday night without thinking of homeroom Monday. Monday was just another “free” day to be a kid, to drink from the water hose (wait a minute ’til it gets cold!), to get sunburned, to hear your momma calling you in for supper.

It’s hot, for sure. Supposed to be more than 100 this weekend. But I can take off enough to stay cool; can’t put on enough in the wintertime to stay warm.

I’ll take summer any day.

It’s been 25 years since I was out walking and met a guy from Up North washing his car. He’d just moved here. He mentioned in passing how hot it was. I nodded and told him it sure was and kept walking.

It was only April. I didn’t have the heart to tell him…

Washington to participate in fifth annual QB Coaching Summit

First-year Northwestern State quarterbacks coach Kyle Washington will be back in school the next two days.

Washington’s instructors will be some of the best offensive minds in football as he takes part in the second annual Ozzie Newsome General Manager Forum and fifth annual Quarterback Coaching Summit.

The event, which will take place in person in Los Angeles and virtually, brings together a variety of current and former NFL coaches, including former Denver head coach Vance Joseph, current Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Indianapolis offensive coordinator Marcus Brady.

The two-day summit will allow participants to take part in workshops that focus on building a coaching staff, quarterback fundamentals, the use of analytics, situational football, how to interview for coaching positions and pass down plan installation.

The summit is put together in partnership with the Black College Football Hall of Fame, whose co-founders include Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame quarterbacks James “Shack” Harris and Doug Williams.

“First, for (Washington), what this will allow him to do is gain experience and knowledge that will help him professionally,” fifth-year NSU head coach Brad Laird said. “Second, you get Northwestern State football out there. Think of what he can bring back to not only the quarterbacks but also the staff with the knowledge he will gain through this opportunity.”

Saturday’s LSHOF Roundtable Luncheon will provide up-close, memorable moments

The “youngest” event during this weekend’s Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Celebration is the most exclusive, yet casual, opportunity for the public to enjoy hearing from the Class of 2022 inductees.

It’s the LSHOF Roundtable Luncheon on Saturday at noon in the ballroom of the Chateau Saint Denis Hotel at 751 Second Street in Natchitoches. There’s still time to be among the 200 guests for the fourth-ever Roundtable Luncheon presented by the Tiger Athletic Foundation.

Registration is available for that event and all other activities during the Induction Celebration beginning Thursday by visiting LaSportsHall.com, or by calling 238-4255.

Festivities begin Thursday evening at 5 with the free of charge La Capitol Federal Credit Union Welcome Reception open to all at the Hall of Fame museum facing the traffic circle on Front Street.

The Roundtable Luncheon starts with tremendous New Orleans-style cuisine and quickly kicks into gear with Fox Sports announcer (and 2020 LSHOF inductee) Tim Brando interviewing small groups of inductees on stage in a very informal and fast-moving setting.

While there are some logical pairings for the interviews, such as six-time Pro Bowl NFL linemen Jahri Evans (Saints) and Kyle Williams (Bills), and LSU All-Americans Susan Jackson (gymnastics) and Britni Sneed Newman (softball) in the 50th anniversary year of Title IX, other groups will fall together in fun and unpredictable fashion.

Among the other 2022 inductees is Journal columnist Teddy Allen, whose folksy sense of humor and long-time friendship with Timmy B. should produce some hysterical exchanges.

Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer Steve Duhon has his own brand of homespun wit and figures to be an entertaining interview for Brando. Duhon is an Opelousas while high school track and cross country coach Claney Duplechin is a proud native of nearby Mamou, which could result in some Cajun humor and insight.

A poignant scene at the 2019 luncheon unfolded before the program when Peyton Manning stopped by to greet LSU legend Johnny Robinson, who was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame two months later. Manning got in his wisecracks with Brando talking about growing up rooting for the then perennially unsuccessful New Orleans Saints, whose quarterback was his dad, Archie.

It all combines to provide a memorable 90 minutes with guests in close proximity to the legends.

The Hall of Fame Roundtable Luncheon shapes up as a highly entertaining opportunity for guests to have a up-close-and-personal experience and be entertained and well fed.
