Meat Pie Breakfast at Lasyone’s in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Two of Natchitoches’ top three claims to fame are being part of the original 1714 French colony that became Louisiana and being the place where the movie Steel Magnolias was filmed. But to many people, the top claim to fame is the Natchitoches meat pie.
Meat pies, popular there since the late 1700s, are turnovers made from seasoned beef and pork in a wheat crust. At Natchitoches’ meat-pie mecca, Lasyone’s Meat Pie Restaurant, they come individually or on a platter with dirty rice, a vegetable of your choice and the salad bar. Or there’s crawfish pie, shrimp and grits, or crawfish étouffée, plus dozens of other choices. Top it off with a slice of Cane River cream pie.
