N Club Hall of Famer J.L. “Leslie” McConathy dies at 87

J.L. “Leslie” McConathy, a standout on Northwestern State’s 1948-49 NAIA national semifinalist men’s basketball team, died at his Rayville home Monday night after battling lymphoma.

McConathy, 87, was the first of three brothers who played basketball at Northwestern State, spawning a family lineage that includes current Demons head coach Mike McConathy, Leslie McConathy’s nephew.

Leslie McConathy was was inducted into the Northwestern State N Club Hall of Fame in 1998. He lettered four years (1945-49) for the Demons and help the 1948-49 squad to the Gulf States Conference championship before its NAIA national tournament run. He also lettered in track and field.

In 2013, Leslie McConathy was honored as a member of the “Fantastic 50,” joining his brothers John and George and their cousin Herschel as part of the Top 100 Demons of the Century.

Funeral arrangements for McConathy are being handled by Mulhearn Funeral Home in Rayville. Services for McConathy are tentatively scheduled for Friday in Rayville.
