Hundreds of children came out to try their hand at catching some catfish as well as participate in multiple events at the Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery’s Kid’s Fishing Derby June 3. The Fishing Derby is put on annually as a community outreach program to get children involved in the outdoors, to explore and learn about the outdoors and to let them enjoy a day of fun.
The event, made possible by the Friends in Support of the Hatchery Group (F.I.S.H.), is sponsored by the Hatchery, Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), Cane River Waterway Commission, Alexandria Zoo, Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation, NPS Dare program, with a special thanks to Natchitoches Parish Hospital for providing lunch for participants.
Events like this are what make Natchitoches a community and bring everyone together. Although there was no official tally of catfish brought in by the young anglers, there were thousands of smiles and memories made throughout the day!
