The Natchitoches Area Chamber of Commerce posted a position statement on preK-12 education on Nov. 1, 2017, on the Chamber Education webpage. The statement reflects the goals of the Education Steering Committee and fits the mission of the Chamber for fostering a thriving community through collaboration.

Late 2016, the Chamber formed a Steering Committee to help outline a direction for improving local elementary and secondary education for all students in Natchitoches Parish. The committee ultimately produced five goals for the system to achieve by 2025; these goals were announced during the Annual Awards Luncheon in February 2017. With those goal in mind, the committee and the Chamber Board have developed a statement to help frame the discussion for education in Natchitoches Parish.

“We know our educators work hard and our district score of “B”, now for two years, reflects that; however, we also know that many students within our community attend C, D and F schools—that is unacceptable. We want to get the entire community focused on working together to achieve excellence for every student within our system,” says Tony Davis, Chair of the Education Steering Committee and Acting President of the Chamber.

“It’s imperative that our entire community find ways to get more involved, such as after school or during summers,” says Chamber Board Chair Kirk Soileau. “We hope this statement resonates across the community as a call to action to get involved.”

The statement starts with: “We believe that all children, regardless of race, religion, economic status, or address, should have access to quality education delivered by passionate, well-prepared, well-resourced educators.” It includes references to the role of community in supporting children, the importance of an administration that places kids first, valuing and developing top-notch educators, and recognizing the importance of birth-to-five learning.
