Three Northwestern State players selected for All-Southland Conference Teams

A-SB-SLC-Graphic.jpg

Three Northwestern State softball players were selected to the All-Southland Conference Teams on Monday, announced the league office.

Second baseman Cayla Jones made the first team and was a finalist for the conference’s Freshman of the Year.

Senior outfielder Sidney Salmans impressed league voters enough to be picked for the second team despite missing the final three conference series with a broken thumb.

Sophomore Kaitlyn St. Clair qualified for third-team utility after playing in the outfield and as a designated player.

The all-conference selections were the first for each player as Salmans adds this league honor to an all-academic pick as a junior.

Senior pitcher Micaela Bouvier and sophomore outfielder Julie Rawls were honorably mentioned at their positions.

“Consistency — these players were the most consistent throughout the year,” said NSU coach Donald Pickett. “A lot of them battled through tough times and injuries and bounced back.

“It’s good to see our kids rewarded for hard work and sacrifice on the field. All of those kids are talented and important to what we do, and a lot of those are also our hardest workers who take the extra time and effort to be the players that they are.”

Jones ranked in the league’s top six in five different categories, including a .382 batting average (fourth), .700 slugging (second), .531 on-base (second), nine home runs (fourth) and 38 runs scored (sixth).

The Missouri City, Texas, native is NSU’s first first-team selection since 2015 when six Lady Demons — including pitchers Bouvier and Mikayla Brown — were picked for the top squad.

Salmans hit .394 in SLC play to raise her season average to .306. The Woodlands, Texas, native had 27 hits in her final 17 games before her injury. Her 25 runs scored this season increased her career total to 125, which is sixth best in program history.

After a few spot starts earlier in the season, St. Clair made her mark after entering the starting lineup in early April with an injury to Rawls.

St. Clair had 13 of 21 RBIs and 10 of her 15 runs scored in the last 16 games. She had NSU’s second-best batting average (.312).

McNeese’s Erika Piancastelli won her fourth consecutive Player and Hitter of the Year.

Nicholls, the league champion, swept the other awards with Megan Landry (pitcher), Jewel Lara (freshman), Kali Clement (newcomer) and Angel Santiago (coach) taking home superlative honors.

League coaches and sports information directors voted on the superlative awards and all-conference teams.

Operation Christmas Child’s West Central LA Team holds kickoff event

A-OCC 2 May18

Westside Baptist Church’s Operation Christmas Child kickoff week ended with a rummage sale to make money for the shipping of the shoeboxes, buying shoeboxes, and purchasing more shoeboxes. Each shoebox is packed with a “wow” item, hygiene items, school supplies, clothes/shoes/accessories and toys. It’s asked that $9 be included for each shoebox. This money will be used for shipping, purchasing “The Greatest Gift” and “The Greatest Journey,” and training teachers to teach “The Greatest Journey.”

Curtis, Elizabeth and Owen Penrod were excited to receive their GO (Gospel Opportunity) shoeboxes at Westside Baptist Church kickoff for Operation Christmas Church with Samaritan’s Purse. The video “From Shoebox to Bible” was shared with church to teach the far reaching impact of one shoebox. New 2018 resources were given out and interesting facts were shared about the 25th anniversary of Operation Christmas Child.

The Northwestern State University Volleyball team held its Spring Dig Fest May 5 at the Point Place Marina. The Spring Digfest, along with one held in the Fall, are fundraisers for the NSU Volleyball team and a fun annual tradition for the community.

The Marina was filled to capacity as fourteen teams from around the area battled throughout the day under a crystal clear blue sky. This year featured over 300 pounds of crawfish giving the event a tailgating family atmosphere. The Dig-Fest is held to finance projects and extras for the team not covered by their budget, such as new equipment for practicing and renovating the locker room. The funds also allow the team a few nice extras while on the road. This year’s Spring Dig Fest is expected to raise $3,500.00 to assist Demon Volleyball

Natchitoches Mobile Market brings fresh, local produce to your neighborhood

Mobille Market

The Natchitoches Farmers Market is a great place to find fresh, local produce. But, for anyone who can’t make it downtown on Saturdays through July 28, the market will travel!

The Natchitoches Mobile Market is part of Ready, Set, Go: the City’s initiative to improve the health and wellness of residents through a three part plan. It provides fresh, local fruits and vegetables from the City’s Community Garden and delivers them to different areas across town.

The Mobile Market will run through August 2 from 3:30-5:30 pm in conjunction with the Natchitoches Portable Park. Tuesdays it will be set up at Pierson Mallett Park on East Fifth Street and Thursdays it will be located at Ben Johnson Park on MLK Drive.

This summer will feature a new location at the Natchitoches Parish Library from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm on Fridays through August 3 (no program July 6). An additional location at City Park will be announced soon (produce will be available to purchase, but no tokens will be given out at the City Park location).

Don’t forget about Kids Club, which provides free tokens equivalent to $5 for kids to spend on fruits and vegetables.

For more information call (318) 238-4211 or go online to http://readysetgonatchitoches.com. Find the Natchitoches Mobile Market on Facebook @ Natchitoches Farmers Market.

Troopers Warn Against Fraudulent LSP Solicitation Phone Calls

A-fraud_alert

Towards the end of 2017, Troopers were made aware of a phone scam affecting many citizens of Louisiana. Scammers were fraudulently using the authority of Louisiana State Police in an effort to obtain money from victims. The public was informed through a press release and social media posts, but following several recent complaints Troopers wish to make the public aware that various phone scams are still occurring.

In November of last year, several complainants stated that impersonators contacted the phones of potential victims by using a call that gave the appearance of originating from a Louisiana State Police phone number. The complainants stated that the caller pretended to be law enforcement, and attempted to get them to give up personal information over the phone. Several recent complainants have made LSP aware of a new scam in which impersonators call potential victims stating that they are working on a fundraiser for either Louisiana State Police or “Troopers.”

Troopers stress that citizens should never give unsolicited callers any personal information, and the Louisiana State Police would never ask for any type of payment, monetary donation, or personal information over the phone. People should be aware that there are numerous organizations across the US that solicit monetary donations on behalf of police organizations, but LSP is not affiliated with any of these. Citizens should research charitable organizations carefully before deciding to send money to them.

Troopers urge citizens who receive suspected fraudulent calls to contact the Louisiana State Analytical and Fusion Center (LA-SAFE) at 225-925-4192.

2018 Run Baby Run Fundraiser held by Women’s Resource Center

By Kevin Shannahan

ARun Baby2018-3

Kevin’s Gallery

The Natchitoches Women’s Resource Center held its 8th annual “Run Baby Run” fundraising one mile and 5k race this Saturday, May 5. This year’s edition of the popular race featured over 85 runners on a picturesque course that started at the parish library and wound through the city before ending back at the library.

The Women’s Resource Center provides pregnancy related assistance to over 400 area women each year, providing 5-10 visits during the pregnancy with help continuing through the child’s first year. The Center provides its clients counseling, education and items such as prenatal vitamins, car seats, clothing and breast pumps. These items and the center’s support give the child and new mother a good start on their new lives. No woman is ever charged a fee. This year’s race is expected to raise $2,500.

The youth of Westside Baptist Church were joined by volunteers from the community in giving course directions and registering the runners. The Natchitoches Police Department gave the racers an escort and the Natchitoches Parish Library hosted the event as it has for the past few years. It is truly a community effort as people from every walk of life joined to help others in our community.

After the conclusion of the race, the crowd of runners, volunteers and supporters held a biodegradable balloon release to honor the boys, girls and unborn children who were helped by the Women’s Resource Center.

The Natchitoches Parish Journal is donating the event photography. Copy protection is off and anyone may download any they wish. If you do see a photograph you like, please consider a donation to the Women’s Resource Center.

Letter to the Editor: No Wake Please!

A-NoWakePlease

Summer is right around the corner and the downtown riverfront is seeing a resurgence of activity in kayaking and standup paddleboarding. All these watercraft are non-powered and have the right of way over powered watercraft. Most of these non-powered drivers are inexperienced watermen and many are kids just having fun on Cane River Lake.

The downtown stretch of Cane River from approximately Maglieaux’s Riverfront Restaurant to the Harrington Law Firm is a NO WAKE zone. That means NO WAKE, not just slowing down to what we, individually, believe to be an OK speed to navigate this stretch of river. About 50% of boat traffic entering this NO WAKE zone slows to idle speed and complies with the NO WAKE rule.

About half of the other 50% are courteous and will slow to idle speed when it’s brought to their attention that they’re making a wake. The other half is impatient to get where they’re going and will slow down, but continue to make a wake. Since there’s been little or no enforcement, they go on with impunity knowing they won’t get stopped and ticketed.

This is a dangerous precedent and an accident waiting to happen. Imagine a car going through a school zone at 35 mph instead of the required speed of 15 mph and your kids or grandkids are crossing the street.

Not only is higher than idle unsafe to low-maneuverability craft, but the wake damages the bulkheads, docks (especially floating docks), and the equipment moored to those docks. Imagine your brand new $25,000 boat being slammed by an inconsiderate boater’s wake against the dock it’s moored to repeatedly as the wave train hits the dock while you’re having a meal at one of the downtown restaurants.

Cane River Lake is a public waterway to be enjoyed by all who love to be on the water. We should all respect our fellow watermen and their gear and treat each other as we want our kids, families, tourists and gear to be treated. Common courtesy and respect goes a long way to ensure fun and safety for all who use the Cane River. A few more minutes of your time is not going to matter in the scheme of your life. Most people use the river as a means of relaxation and joy after a stressful day or week at work. So, slow down in any NO WAKE situation and allow all of us to have a pleasant day.

AxsomAir announces SWEPCO partnership, Do you get a check?

AD-AxsomAirSWEPCO
AxsomAir and Plumbing is very proud to announce their partnership with Southwestern Electric Power Company or SWEPCO! AxsomAir has been selected to join the SWEPCO Louisiana 2018 Residential Solutions program. When you buy your new high efficiency Heat Pump or Air Conditioner from AxsomAir, SWEPCO incentive program will pay up to $2000!

“SWEPCO cares about our customers and wants their home to be comfortable and their energy bills to be affordable,” said Jeff Thigpen, SWEPCO’s energy efficiency and consumer program coordinator. “We partner with HVAC contractors like Josh Axsom of AxsomAir to offer incentives as high as $2,000 to our customers toward the purchase of high efficiency heat pumps and air conditioners. That makes a big impact on such a large purchase.”

“The major energy users in most homes are the heating and cooling systems. With an expected life span of 15 to 20 years, it’s important to purchase the most efficient unit you can afford. This program is designed to help SWEPCO customers offset a portion of the cost to purchase these more efficient heat pumps and HVAC units. This improves the comfort level in the customer’s home, and helps save them money through reduced energy bills over the life of the unit.”

We are really excited about this new partnership with SWEPCO, says Josh Axsom with AxsomAir. The incentive funds are limited and when they are gone, they are gone. If you are a SWEPCO customer call us today at 352-7777 to schedule your free estimate and find out how big your incentive check will be!

Small Town, Big Flavors: Firehouse Food Destinations features Natchitoches Fire Department

Natchitoches Fire Chief John Wynn cooked up a homemade meal with Mark Myers Jr., the host of a new show called Firehouse Food Destinations. The web series features unique firehouse dishes, while highlighting fire departments and the city they serve. The first episode featuring the Natchitoches Fire Department aired May 4.Firehouse 1

Six local fire departments in Louisiana were contacted and Natchitoches was the first to respond. What better City to start this new series in then Natchitoches, the oldest City in the Louisiana Purchase. It also has some of the best cuisine to choose from.

The film crew consisted of firefighters, most of whom dabble in videography, photography and cooking businesses. Allen Dantes works for the Shreveport Fire Department. He came up with the idea for a show that would focus on local fire departments and the history of the towns they serve. He brought in former firefighter John Phelan who runs a company called Black Helmet Films. Mark Meyers Jr. is a chef and host of ReMARKable Foods. TraJuan White fights fires and runs White Prophecy Photography and Videography.

“I reached out to these guys because I knew they could help bring this vision to reality,” said Dantes.

Wynn said he and his firefighters spend a lot of time at the station, which means a lot of time is spent in the kitchen.

“We always bond when we’re cooking breakfast or any of our other meals,” said Wynn, who cooked Natchitoches’ famous meat pies for the show when the crew filmed their first episode in the NFD’s kitchen Jan. 7. But Wynn took it a step further and topped the meat pies off with some delicious seafood etouffée.

The goal is to generate enough interest with this web series so the crew can eventually pitch it to a TV network.

“The food in Natchitoches was amazing,” said Dantes. “We loved the City and we hope every town we fix in is as welcoming and pleasant as the Fire Department and Natchitoches were.”

Dantes appreciates the City’s willingness to help with their project, Northwestern State University for allowing them to film on campus, Lasyone’s for allowing them to film in the kitchen and helping out with the meat pies for the episode, and Super 1 for donating the rest of the food.
