Kiwanis Club learns about upcoming community events

The Kiwanis Club of Natchitoches met Thursday, Aug. 16 at the NSU Recreation Complex. The club members had the opportunity to hear from Jill Leo, Director of Festivals and Events for the Natchitoches Historic District Business Association and Derek Donald of NSU Crew.

Did you know that NSU Crew is bringing back the 5K head race that used to be hosted here years ago? It will feature a Junior competing level for elementary and middle school aged rowers, a College aged competing level and a Master’s Level for rowers who are out of College. This event will take place on the Cane River Lake on Oct. 6.

Also, Jill Leo shared information on the upcoming Antique Car Show which will be held on Sept. 28-29 in downtown Natchitoches. Expect over 400 cars to be lined in the downtown area that weekend. Also, the Natchitoches Christmas Festival will hold its opening weekend Nov. 24 and will feature two of Santa’s Reindeer. There will also be more activities throughout the weekdays on the downtown stage this Christmas Season.

The Kiwanis Club of Natchitoches is continuing their school uniform drive until Aug. 31. Collection sites are Waskom, Brown and Associates, Bank of Montgomery, and City Bank. The Kiwanis Club is also collecting supplies to donate to the Shriner’s Hospital in Shreveport. Wish lists include school supplies, craft items, t-shirt paints, nerf balls, movies, Itunes gift cards and Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 and PS4 games and controllers. These items can be dropped off at Chili’s of Natchitoches during a ‘Give Back Night’ to benefit the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club Sept. 6 from 5-8 pm.

The Kiwanis Club of Natchitoches,, welcomes new members who want to serve their community. Join them at the bi-weekly meeting held the first and third Thursdays at the NSU Recreation Complex at 12 pm.
