The Natchitoches Parish Library was filled with the sounds of young musicians as several members of Northwestern State University’s National Association for Music Education (NAFME) chapter brought their instruments to teach-and inspire-local elementary school students. The NSU students, all music education majors, band members, and juniors at NSU, demonstrated different woodwind instruments for the children. This month’s topic was woodwinds. The presentation was a first of several throughout the school year. Next month’s event will teach about brass instruments. At the end of the presentation, students were shown how to build a homemade harmonica.
Northwestern State University’s music education majors are an impressive group of young people. The Natchitoches Parish Journal extends its best wishes to them as they embark on their educational careers. We would also hope that they would consider a career in the parish’s public school system.
