Annual “Fork Cancer” week kicks into gear

Northwestern State Athletics’ annual “Fork Cancer” initiative hits its stride beginning Thursday night.

The 11-day fundraiser, which is partnering this year with the Northwestern Louisiana Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society, began Monday and runs through Oct. 19.

This year, Northwestern State Athletics Is accepting donations for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy at the outpatient center in Natchitoches.

A donation box is located in Room 103B in the NSU Athletics Fieldhouse. The public is being asked to donate drinks (water, juice, sports drinks), snacks, coloring books and colors, crossword puzzles, inspirational or positive books and blankets or throws that will be delivered to the patients.

Drop-off points will be established at NSU’s volleyball match against McNeese on Thursday, at Turpin Stadium during Saturday’s home football game against Sam Houston State and at the Oct. 19 home soccer match against Southeastern Louisiana.

Additionally, both the Northwestern State volleyball and soccer teams will wear special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off online at www.NSUDemons.com and in person at Thursday’s volleyball match and at the Oct. 19 soccer match.

Proceeds from the jersey auctions will benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
