Crowds enjoy spring festivals and warmer weather

The weather was sublime for a series of events on March 23 that signaled the beginning of spring in Natchitoches. Bloomin’ on the Bricks offered a variety of plants and gardening items for anyone with a green thumb. In conjunction with this spring garden festival, Art Along the Bricks featured vendor booths full of paintings, ceramics, and other arts and crafts items. Musicians performed while the crowd meandered down the bricks of Front Street.

While these events are well known by residents and visitors alike, a new addition added an element of entertainment to the sunny Saturday activities. CAPA on the Cane offered music and dance performances from the School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern State University.

NSU Dance students performed a piece from their original dance version of Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat.” Other performances included NSU Jazz Orchestra, NSU Musical Theater, NSU Men’s Chorus, NSU Tap Dance Rep, and a Natchitoches-NSU Symphony Pops Concert.

NSU Art Department students and faculty sold their work at Art Along the Bricks as part of a fundraiser for an annual trip they take to New Mexico. The trip offers students many opportunities to grow, and the ability to be exposed to lots of cultural art, as well as being able to work with local artists. Donations are still needed to help students afford this life changing experience.
