City Council will award bid for Chamber remodel project

It’s been a long time in the making, but the City Council approved the introduction of an ordinance to award the bid for the City Council Chambers renovation project at Monday night’s meeting, April 22. This project will remodel the Arts Building, located on Second Street. The bid will be awarded to Prothro Construction LLC of Cypress for $495,716 once it receives the Council’s final vote at next month’s meeting.

The project is projected to start within the next 30-45 days and should take approximately 120 days. City Council meetings will be moved to the municipal building next to the Fire Department in the meantime.

The remodel will include rearranging the layout of the building with a new raised Council seating area, a new door on the South side of the building closer to City Hall, women and men restrooms in the front of the building with two office spaces, a second set of glass doors in the foyer area, rewiring, new plumbing, a new HVAC system, new lighting, and cleaning off the upper windows to allow for natural lighting as well.

  1. I feel if the citizens of Natchitoches all know about this, a high percentage would be against it. If so, how do we stop it? The gods have spoken, and they want a new palace to show people how important they are. They believe themselves to be worthy of 1/2 million dollars of improvements. They believe themselves to be worthy to sit above others in a small building. Really, is this necessary? They can be seen while seated at floor level. So how do we stop this nonsense. Do we need to do a recall?

    • you are correct .The ego’s of these people to think they need better and bigger building and to sit above the people. The city needs new blood with no ties to front street like you said and the council needs to recognize there is more to Natchitoches then front street.

  2. Pay attention, downtown and front street are all that the power cares about. Now you ya e 2 people running for parish president that either own businesses on front street or were the leader of the Downtown Business Association.

Wake up folks and elect people that have interests outside of front street

  3. why wasn’t a local contractor awarded this job ? can they use the missing
$19,000 to help with this build ? why do you need a brand new building for a
short meeting that happens once a month ?

  4. $495,714 won’t be the final cost. As with ANY project the city has taken on, change orders will be made. The length of the project will enlarge, and the cost will go above the half-million mark.

Could build a designated structure for what this will end up costing.

    • I’d like to see the itemized quote, line by line. How the heck does it cost $Half a Million for renovations? Impeach the Mayor and all City Councilpersons!

(had to throw in the “impeach” craze thing, LOL!)

    • you are correct .It is like all they care about is Front street how pretty and shiny it all looks, forget about the rest of the town that’s falling apart by the
hour.As soon as you hit the the bricks it should be “utopia” angels sing, bright
lights. But wait down go to second street ore texas those are horrible and dangerous just stay with us on Front st.

  6. I would like to know approximately how often this area is used. How often are council meetings held? Reading about the changes causes great concern for me, as right now there is a problem even getting the council members to use their microphones so people attending meetings can hear. With all the true needs in Natchitoches, to me spending this much money on this building is like putting lipstick on a pig and calling it improvement. A raised council seating area is a bit pretentious as the building is not large enough to warrant the money spent there. A new door closer to City Hall, Why? It’s still basically the same distance. Seems to me they want to remodel so that it will belong to city council only and small groups are not able to use the building, and there is no other area for small groups. The building does need improvement, but the amount quoted is insane. How many strikes does make for the mayor? Hopefully next time we will have a mayor with more common sense, and that statement includes some city council members.

    • My gosh where is all of this money coming from the city council is spending money like it was running out of style
