According to Kris: The First Date

By Kris James

Happy Wednesday Stylers!

Let’s be real, first dates can be awkward, that’s if you get asked on one. I’m thirty and I still haven’t been on a real date. Going on an actual date seems like a thing of the past. Let’s face it. In this day and age most dates consist of going over to someone’s house and chilling. One thing we can all agree on is that the first impression is everything. It’s true when it comes to a job interview and is very true on the first date. First dates can be exciting, but dressing for them is hard.

Once upon a time, dinner dates were something to dress up for. To restore a sense of class to the occasion try to go all out on dinner reservations and the outfit to match. Set the new standard of dating. For the guys, tailored separates are at the top of my list. This is why I say every guy should have a suit in his closet. Don’t get lazy! Leave your sneakers at the house. If you want a second date your outfit depends on it. For the ladies, don’t let your date outdo you. This is the time to show off that sexy side you’re afraid to show. Pairing a sheer top with leather bottoms are HOT! Leather pants are a must, so invest. A slinky slip dress is perfect because it’s kinda like lingerie and a blazer dress is eye-catching.

Heading to the cinema is a classic date that all couples enjoy. The requirements of this date are different from dining at a restaurant. Yes, you’ll be sitting in the dark for about two hours, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put some effort into your style. Just keep in mind that you’ll be sitting in a practical, narrow row of seats in a cramped cold theater. This is the time to show off that perfect pair of jeans that fits your body just right. Try pairing your jeans with an off-the-shoulder top, peasant blouse or a crop top with the right shoes to dress things up a bit. Guys should play it smart with some relaxed fit jeans or casual chinos pants, paired with a button-down shirt and a light jacket or cardigan.

Whether your date is taking you bowling, lunch or a quiet dinner at their place, always drop your location to your best friend just in case. But overall, a cool and casual date outfit is a must. The goal is to appear effortless cool and easy chic. Guys, should wear a t-shirt paired with some jeans is a relaxed look that lacks the frumpiness. Add a jacket, something minimal but not boring, to polish the look. Ladies should wear a lace top and black jeans are a timeless classic. To add texture try adding a leather jacket. Sneakers are okay!

The trick with date outfits is to turn heads without looking like you over tried. You want to be comfortable, confident, and let your personality shine through.

  1. Fun article! Thanks for updating us Natchitoches old folks with some style trends for the young set. Although, I don’t see a first-date cardigan working out for most straight guys…but what do I know? I’m just enjoying hearing a new voice in the Natchitoches media. Keep it up, Kris!
