NSU President’s Leadership Program donates portable libraries to MLK Center and Parc Natchitoches

The President’s Leadership Program at Northwestern State University, organized by the Office of First Year Experience, is completed by students during the spring and fall semester of their freshman year. One of the groups within the program decided to focus on literacy in the Natchitoches area. This group held a reading day at LP Vaughn and made two portable libraries. One will reside at the MLK Center and one, made with a built-in bench, will go out at the new Parc Natchitoches when construction is finished.

PLP Literacy group member Jessica Mullican said the idea to create the portable libraries was so everyone could have access to book without needing a library card or worrying about late fees. She had portable libraries back in her hometown. She loved reading and there was one in the park she played at as a child.

Her group teamed up with NSU First Lady Jennifer Maggio who has her own initiative called Forks up for Literacy. She helped the group fund the whole project and NSU Carpentry built everything on campus. “On behalf of the Recreation Department we would like to thank the President’s Leadership Program and NSU First Lady Jennifer Maggio for the time, effort, and energy to give back to the community,” said Warner.
