A trio of Northwestern State baseball players earned All-Southland Conference honors announced by the league Monday morning.
Second baseman Daunte Stuart earned second-team all-conference honors while pitchers Cal Carver and Levi David earned third-team honors for the Demons, who open Southland Conference Tournament play at 7 p.m. Wednesday against tournament host Southeastern Louisiana. League coaches and sports information directors voted on the three teams and an All-Defensive Team.
Stuart, a freshman from The Woodlands, Texas, leads the Southland Conference and ranks 16th national in walks (44). Stuart leads qualifying NSU hitters in batting average (.278) and all Demon hitters in doubles (13), home runs (7), RBIs (30) and total bases (84).
Stuart posted a 10-game hitting streak from Feb. 21-March 7, the longest by a Demon this season, and he leads the team with 12 multi-hit games and shares the team lead with eight multi-RBI contests.
Stuart’s 44 walks rank sixth in school single-season history, one away from moving him into a three-way tie for fourth place, and his 0.86 walks per game leads the conference and ranks 35th nationally. Defensively, Stuart has been part of 22 double plays, also a team-best total.
Carver has been Northwestern State’s most consistent starter this season, opening the season with a 22 2-3-inning scoreless streak. A sophomore left-hander from San Antonio, Texas, by way of Wichita State, Carver led the Demons in wins (6) and innings pitched (78.0) while tying for the team lead in starts (13). Carver ranked second on the team in strikeouts (73) and stands fourth in the Southland Conference in complete games (3).
Carver twice struck out 10 batters in a game, doing so against Incarnate Word on March 13 and at Sam Houston on March 20. He twice worked eight innings in a start – at Central Arkansas on April 30 and against McNeese on May 7.
David gave the Demons a pair of third-team pitchers after striking out 97 hitters, the second-most in the Southland Conference. His 15.05 strikeouts per nine innings pace the conference and rank third nationally entering the conference tournament.
A sophomore from Waxahachie, Texas, David posted three double-digit strikeout games, topped by a career-best 14 against McNeese on May 8 that fell one short of tying the school single-game mark. Led by David’s total, the Demon pitching staff fanned a school-record 22 hitters in the 11-inning win.
David earned a pair of Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors this year, taking home the awards on March 22 after striking out 12 Sam Houston hitters in 6 1-3 innings and on April 5 after tossing seven scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts against eventual league champion Abilene Christian.
This marks the second straight time the Demons have placed three players on the all-conference team and the third in a row with multiple selections for NSU. There were no teams chosen after the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.
