The Natchitoches City Council recognized Natchitoches youth at its Monday night meeting, Aug. 23, who were track and field participants at the 2021 AAU National Meet. There were around 15,000 people in attendance. Coach Davin White with the City’s Recreation Department gave COuncil members information about each athlete and how the City’s programming benefits them.
“We get to send kids to college through this program,” he explained.
Thirteen Natchitoches youth athletes went to the meet:
Ava Moses (Medaled) – long jump
Isabella Clark – shot put
Jada Johnson – 200, 400 and long jump
Kimberly Cain from Natchitoches Central went in the long jump event and the 400 at the regional meet where she qualified to go to the Junior Olympics.
Antonio Brown – discus and shot put
Braylin Demars – 200 and 400 meter dash
Demarion Sowell – long jump and triple jump
Derrick Sowell Jr. – shot put
Jayden Johnson – javelin
Joe Duirden – 1500 meter
Joey Carpenter Jr. – 100, 200 and long jump
Latrell Frederick Jr. – discus and shot put
Marquez Stevenson (medaled) – 100, 200, 400
As the athletes came to the podium to introduce themselves to the Council, the clinking of their medals drew attention.
White mentioned he hopes to bring track meets to Natchitoches as it provides a central location for athletes to travel to, not to mention the economic impact from $4-10 million depending on the size of the event.
