Libe Banuelos named SLC Goalkeeper of the Week

Following a weekend in which she posted a shutout on the road against Jackson State and a career-high 10 saves at LSU, Libe Banuelos was named the Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Banuelos, a junior from Deusto, Basque, began the weekend with a three-save shutout at Jackson State on Friday in a 2-0 victory before rounding out the week with a career-high 10 saves at LSU in a 2-1 loss.

The 10 stops against LSU are the most saves by an NSU goalkeeper since Acelya Aydogmus also stopped 10 shots against Prairie View A&M on Aug. 27, 2021.

In the past three games, Banuelos has surrendered just two goals. She currently leads the SLC in saves with 33, recording at least five saves on three occasions so far.

It is the first player of the week honor for Northwestern State. NSU last won the award following the regular season finale in 2022 in which Chloe DeShazer recorded a shutout against Southeastern Louisiana.

Banuelos leads the Lady Demons into the conference season, beginning with a visit from Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. The first two conference games are at home, also hosting UIW on Sept. 22.
