The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists and residents that public schools across Natchitoches Parish will officially reopen on Monday, Aug. 10.
As students, faculty and staff return to campuses for the new school year, motorists are urged to exercise extra caution, remain alert and obey all traffic laws in and around school zones.
To help ensure a safe start to the school year, NPSO School Resource Officers (SROs) will be stationed on campuses throughout the parish. Deputies will also conduct increased patrols in school zones during peak morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times.
Deputies patrolling parish highways and roadways will also be paying close attention to motorists who fail to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm.
Pay attention, slow down and stop for school buses. Don’t let a moment of impatience result in a citation—or something far worse.
“The safety of our students is a top priority,” said Sheriff Stuart Wright.
“We’re asking everyone to avoid distractions, reduce their speed in school zones and remain alert for children and school buses. A moment of caution can prevent a lifetime of regret.”
The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office encourages motorists to keep these back-to-school safety reminders in mind:
• Slow down in school zones. Obey posted speed limits and be especially cautious during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up hours.
• Watch for children. Be alert for students walking, biking or crossing streets near schools, bus stops and residential areas.
• Stop for school buses. Never pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended.
• Eliminate distractions. Put your phone down, keep your eyes on the road and remain focused on driving.
• Expect increased traffic. Allow extra travel time during school commute hours and be patient with buses, parents and other motorists.
• Be alert around bus stops. Children may unexpectedly enter or cross the roadway while waiting for or getting off a school bus.
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to talk with children about safely entering and exiting school buses, crossing streets only when it is safe to do so, and remaining aware of traffic while walking or biking to and from school.
