Creole and Family Festival Set for Oct. 9-11 at Isle Brevelle

St. Augustine Catholic Church will hold its Creole and Family Festival Oct. 9-11 at 2262 Highway 484 in Isle Brevelle. Entry is free. Friday runs from 6 to 10 p.m. with fried fish and trimmings, festival T-shirts and music by DJ Joey. Saturday opens at 8 a.m. with the third annual Run for Rod, a run and walk in memory of Chadwick “Rod” Nelson, followed by games, bingo, raffles and food from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mass at 5 p.m., festival activities from 6 to 11 p.m., a zydeco concert by Gerard Delafose and the Zydeco Gators from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9 p.m. Sunday has Mass at 10:30 a.m. and festival activities from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers ask that no one park on the riverbank. Limited vendor space is available. The church, established in 1803, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

NSU Students Drill for Tuesday’s Career Fair

Northwestern State students spent last week getting ready for Tuesday’s Fall Career Fair through Career Fair Prep Week, organized by Counseling and Career Services. Walk-in resume reviews ran Tuesday, mock interviews with live employer feedback Wednesday, and a Thursday seminar on networking, professional presentation and career fair etiquette. Students could also pick out a free business outfit from the Career Closet through a partnership with the Department of Business. Employer volunteers came from Boise Cascade, RoyOMartin and Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, along with faculty and staff from across campus. Enterprise Mobility sponsored the week, funding resume holders, journals, career padfolios and an iPad given away as a prize.
“Students need to know employers’ expectations before walking into a career fair,” said Tiffany Carrier, job location and development officer in Counseling and Career Services. “Obtaining a job isn’t as simple as handing someone a resume.”
The Fall Career Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the Friedman Student Union Ballroom, with more than 40 employers and graduate schools. It is open to students of all classifications and to alumni.
STEM Day Draws 600 High Schoolers to NSU

From flying drones to handling snakes, guiding airplanes and cracking codes, students from 18 high schools were led through demonstrations, workshops and guided exploration of all branches of science, engineering, math and technology at Northwestern State University’s STEM Day Sept. 25.
Broken into small groups, more than 600 prospective students rotated through labs and classrooms around campus to explore STEM concepts, visit with current NSU students and faculty and talk about career paths and scholarship opportunities in NSU’s School of STEM, which includes the departments of biology and microbiology, mathematics, physical science, engineering technology and veterinary technology.
NSU offers undergraduate degrees in those areas of study, as well as concentrations in physics, chemistry, computer science, sports analytics, advanced manufacturing, forensics, clinical lab science and other high-demand areas. Graduates are prepared for careers in science, manufacturing technology, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy and more.
Schools from Rapides, Caddo, Allen, Vernon, Natchitoches, DeSoto, Webster and Red River parishes participated. Anna Dugas, professor of physics and collaboration facilitator for the School of STEM, coordinated the event.
