LSMSA Hosts Exploration Day Monday for Prospective Students
Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts
The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts will hold an Exploration Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, for prospective students and their families. Visiting students sit in on classes while parents hear from administrators about the school’s residential model. The event is recommended for students in eighth grade or higher; younger siblings may come but must stay with parents. Registration is required at LSMSA.edu/visit, and a second Exploration Day is set for Nov. 9.
LSMSA, created by the Legislature in 1983, is the state’s public residential high school for academically motivated students and charges no tuition. In the 2027 Niche.com rankings released this fall, its faculty was named the best public high school teaching staff in the nation, and the school ranked first in Louisiana for public high schools, teachers, STEM and magnet schools. Faculty must hold a master’s degree or higher in what they teach, and 85 percent hold a doctorate or other terminal degree.
Multi-Piano Festival Fills Magale Stage This Weekend
Northwestern State University
The Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern State will host the Louisiana Music Teachers Association Piano Ensemble Festival Oct. 10-11 in Magale Recital Hall, putting multiple grand pianos on stage at once. The two-day event combines rehearsals, coaching and group activities, ending in a large ensemble concert.
Two performances are set for Saturday, Oct. 10. Participating students perform at 6:30 p.m., conducted by NSU Director of Choral Activities Shane Thomas. At 7:30 p.m., Chialing Hsieh, associate professor of collaborative piano, performs a Festival Artist Recital with other LMTA teachers and students, with works by Holst, Saint-Saëns, Ravel and Rachmaninoff.
“The Piano Ensemble Festival is rewarding in that students develop musical connections with their peers,” said festival founder and chair Megan Reilly Shannon. “They get to experience the thrill of ensemble playing while learning to follow a conductor and gaining valuable audition, rehearsal and concert experience.”
