THE CITY OF NATCHITOCHES IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

East Natchitoches Elementary School Shines at the Regional Science Fair!

Thirty-six students from four schools in Central Louisiana competed at the Louisiana Region IV Science and Engineering Fair held Saturday, March 2 at the LSU-A Campus in Alexandria. East Natchitoches Elementary School set the pace, bringing in a bus with 14 students under East Natchitoches Elementary Principal Chrystal Davis and science teachers Lori Bertrand and Brittani Fields. The students at the Regional Fair were the top finishers among the competitors at their school’s science fair. It should be noted that the Natchitoches group comprised over one third of the competitors present. That is a remarkable achievement that speaks well of the students, their families, and their teachers.

As a writer for the Natchitoches Parish Journal and a former teacher in one of the poorest parishes in the state, I have long maintained that there are talented and intelligent children in each and every one of our parish’s schools. They will rise to any challenge placed before them. All they need is leadership. It is quite evident that the leadership and faculty of East Natchitoches Elementary School share that belief. It is long past time for every single public school in the parish to have students competing at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Of the 14 students from East Natchitoches Elementary School who competed at the fair, 11 of them won honors. Kyndall Bobb will go on to represent our parish at the state science fair to be held in Baton Rouge later this month.

The Natchitoches Parish Journal wishes to commend the faculty and staff of East Natchitoches Elementary School for all their hard work in providing this wonderful opportunity to the children entrusted to you. We also extend our best wishes to Kyndall Bobb for the state Science Fair. Go Eagles!

NSU’s Army ROTC Holds its Second Annual “Demon Challenge” – a Fun Challenge for Area High Schools!

From pushups to navigation and rope bridges, 150 area high school Junior ROTC Cadets got outside their comfort zones and enjoyed Northwestern State’s Army ROTC’s second annual Demon Challenge, Friday, March 1. The cadets from NCHS and 8 other high schools spent a fun day competing in a series of events designed to test their fitness, resiliency, and leadership skills. The day started with cadets completing an orienteering course that took them across the NSU campus. They then went on to test their fitness in a series of timed events such as pushups, sprint, drag, throw and planking. The fitness testing was assisted by six members of Fort Johnson’s A Battery, 5-25 Field Artillery, commanded by Captain Tanisha Bethel who graciously took time out from their duties to help with the events. Shreveport’s Army Recruiting Battalion likewise assisted in making the day a success.

After a superb BBQ lunch supplied by NSU ROTC, the high school cadets competed in a two mile ruck march where they raced in two person teams carrying packs with 20lb weights. The teams ended their day on a high note, sampling the Demon Regiment’s ropes course. The Demon Challenge was a superb opportunity for our area’s young people to test themselves, learn, and grow.

Both Northwestern State University and the university’s Army ROTC program represent a tremendous opportunity for our area’s young people to build a solid future for themselves. The Natchitoches Parish Journal commends all of the high school students who came out, the NSU cadets, college students themselves not much older than the high school students, and the young soldiers, NCOs and officers who helped make the Demon Challenge a well-run and fun event. Our nation’s young people are capable of so much more than they get credit for. The Natchitoches Parish Journal is looking forward to seeing some of those superb young people building their future at NSU after they finish high school. Fork ‘em Demons!

Embracing Change, Serving All: A Vision for Mayor by Lee Posey

In a time of shifting paradigms and evolving communities, it’s imperative to have leadership that transcends traditional boundaries and champions inclusivity above all else. Having previously occupied the position of Mayor from 2012 to 2020 I recognize the need for change. As I embrace a new opportunity to serve, I stand committed to embodying this sentiment and prioritizing the needs and aspirations of every resident, irrespective of color or circumstance.

Vision Statement:

My vision for our city is one of unity, progress, and equity. I envision a Natchitoches where every individual feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute to our collective prosperity. As Mayor, I will work tirelessly to dismantle barriers to opportunity, address systemic inequities, and foster an environment where everyone can thrive.

Key Principles:

1. Accessible Leadership: Accessibility will be a hallmark of my tenure as Mayor. I will prioritize transparency, open communication, and community engagement, making myself readily available to listen to the concerns and aspirations of all residents.

2. Collaboration: As Mayor, I firmly believe in the power of collaboration and teamwork to drive positive change. No single individual has all the answers, but by coming together as a cohesive team, we can leverage our collective strengths and talents to address the challenges facing our city. I am committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity, mutual respect, and open communication, where every voice is heard and valued. Together, as a united team, we will tackle our city’s most pressing issues, seize opportunities for growth and prosperity, and build a brighter future for all residents.

3. Colorblind Representation: In my administration, diversity will not only be celebrated but embraced as a cornerstone of our strength. I will appoint leaders who reflect the rich tapestry of our city, ensuring that every perspective is represented at the decision-making table.

4. Inclusive Governance: I firmly believe that the true measure of our success as a city lies in our ability to uplift and empower all residents. I will govern with fairness, empathy, and a dedication to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.

5. Results-Oriented Action: Talk is cheap; action is what truly matters. I am committed to delivering tangible results that improve the lives of our residents, from expanding economic opportunities to enhancing public safety and quality of life.

Conclusion:

As we stand at the precipice of a new era for our city, I am energized by the prospect of leading Natchitoches into a future defined by unity, compassion, and progress. Together, let us reject the status quo, transcend the limitations of the past, and build a city where every individual can realize their full potential. Join me in this journey, and together, we will shape a brighter tomorrow for all.

Lady Chiefs make some noise by knocking off small school power Buckeye

The Natchitoches Central softball team picked up an impressive 5-3 road win Thursday at two-time defending state champion Buckeye.

Buckeye (5-4) opened with a two-run bottom of the first, but NCHS (4-5) cut the lead in half an inning later on a solo home run to left field by Mallory Lacour.

The Lady Chiefs captured the lead, 5-2, scoring four times in the top of the fourth. An error scored one run, Morgan Robinson singled, scoring one run, and Lila Robertson doubled, scoring two runs.

Sydney Terrell went the distance in the circle for NCHS, scattering nine hits and allowing only one earned run.

Lacour showed the depth of the NCHS lineup by leading the Lady Chiefs with two hits in four at bats out of the seven slot in the batting order.

Bucking the average? Not this year

As an outdoor writer/broadcaster, there are several things on my work schedule. For instance, every week I write an outdoor column appearing in seven publications around north and central Louisiana. In addition, I produce and record four weekly radio programs. When opportunities are presented, I write an occasional article for magazines.

One thing that has been a regular assignment for the past 10 years or so is to contact, interview and write articles for Louisiana Sportsman magazine and web site about trophy bucks taken in Louisiana. I enjoy everything I do for outdoors media but especially rewarding is getting to do articles on these big bucks that come to my attention either by my being contacted by successful hunters or by browsing social media to find photos hunters post when they are successful in downing a trophy.

Granted, I don’t get them all as some hunters prefer to keep their success under wraps as they have no interest in sharing details preferring to keep details and locations secret. I totally accept that. If I had a secret honey hole where I find my trophies, I might be reluctant to share too many details. Even so, I average getting to write articles on at least twenty-five big bucks each season. The ones I do write about give me an idea of what type of bucks on average are taken each season.

From my contacts for the season just ended, my conclusion is that the number and quality of bucks this year was average or maybe slightly below average. Drought conditions this past summer affecting browse plants no doubt contributed to this season’s somewhat lower results.

In past years, my articles have covered an occasional buck weighing in excess of 300 pounds and a few have resulted in impressive scores of 270 inches or better. I did articles on 30 trophy bucks this past season with buck with the heaviest body weighing just over 230 pounds. The highest scoring buck I located measured 190 inches of antler mass.

Looking over the statistics of bucks taken last season covered in articles I wrote were impressive, but not quite as eye-catching as some in seasons past.

The highest number of bucks I found were taken in Union Parish with five while Beauregard Parish produced four, indicating that you are likely to find a trophy really from one end of the state to the other. Bucks were taken in twenty-two parishes from north to central to the delta region to southwest Louisiana.

How about antler measurements? The thirty bucks in my articles averaged just over 156 inches of mass while the average number of antler points were 10.26. How about body weights? This came out to 192.6 pounds per buck.

During the month of October, nine bucks were reported, November had the highest number with 15 while December produces six.

Four bucks were taken by traditional archery equipment, two with crossbows and the majority, 24, fell to high powered rifles.

A number of trophies were taken by happenstance. They just showed up. Many of the more successful hunters, however, work all year to prepare food plots, keep minerals available, especially during spring and summer when new antlers and muscle mass are growing.

I’m already looking forward to deer season 2024-25 when we get to do it all over again. Maybe this will be the season with weather conditions improved and I’ll get a call from you or find your photo of your buck on social media. Be assured, if this happens, I’ll be in touch.
