The music education department of CAPA at NSU will present Music Morning, a program of music activities for Natchitoches children on Saturday morning, March 17 at CAPA. Children ages 4-11 are invited to participate in a variety of music experiences that include singing, music games, instrument demonstrations, and a music craft.
This event is presented by NSU music education majors, who will conduct the activities. Former NSU music education major and current elementary music teacher Jeralyn Wilhite is the originator of the event and believes that every child has the right to music.
She writes, “Music changes how we see the world, even at a young age. It opens the door to imagination. Music Morning is an opportunity for the children of the community to come and receive keys to unlocking that door – to see that music is out there and it IS within their grasp.”
Current music education major and NAfME President Lauren Schexnayder is coordinating the event. The NSU Chapter of National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the Music Education Department in CAPA are sponsoring the event.
Registration will begin in CAPA at 8 am and activities will begin at 8:30 am and continue until noon, culminating with a large group singalong and presentation of what the children learned throughout the morning.
Assistant Professor of Music Education Sharon Joy is assisting with the coordination of the event and says, “This event has been planned by music education students who are committed to bringing music to Natchitoches children. It’s exciting to see this passion among our students.” All events at Music Morning are free. For additional information contact Dr. Sharon Joy at firstname.lastname@example.org or 357-5754.
