A crowd of around 75 supporters of our area youth gathered at the Braxton home on Starlight Point for the annual Boys’ & Girls’ Club Celebrity Chef and Waiters event. The popular local tradition, now in its 24th year, featured 10 teams from local restaurants presenting their finest dishes. The attendees could choose from a variety of Louisiana dishes ranging from gumbo to chicken to crawfish pasta, all in a festive atmosphere. If they did not feel like standing in line, a solution was easily available utilizing four celebrity waiters who stood by to serve the diners. Brad Laird and Mike McConathy, the Northwestern State University football and men’s basketball coaches and their spouses, brought food and drinks to tables in return for tips.
One of the evening’s highlights was a presentation of a $5,000.00 check from the Natchitoches Community Improvement Foundation. Foundation members Ed Ward, Kelvin Porter and Mildred Joseph presented the check to Peggy Braxton and Norwood Jackson of the Natchitoches Boys’ & Girls’ Club. Overall, the event is expected to raise $20,000.00 for this worthy cause.
The Boy’s and Girls’ Club is truly a community-wide endeavor. Nine NSU students work for the club. Athletes and student groups such as Helping Hands contribute time and work for the club. Above all, they provide an example of success that the children can easily relate to and learn from.
