NSU holds 52nd Annual Porter Forum

Porter Forum Speakers.jpeg

Speakers at Northwestern State University’s 52nd annual J. Walter Porter Forum encouraged students to lead the fight against sexual harassment in the workplace. Themed “Leadership and Empowerment: Time’s Up,” this year’s forum featured Julie Couret and Keith Poirrier who discussed how to identify and speak up about inappropriate behaviors in the workplace and promote a culture of teamwork and accountability.

Couret discussed her personal experiences with sexual harassment at work and said you don’t have to be the one experiencing it to speak up.

“Your gut instinct is the guidepost to what is a hostile work environment,” Couret said. “Determine what a reasonable person would find acceptable in the workplace. Act appropriately for the environment.”

Couret is founder and Chief Executive Coach of her management consulting firm, 7602 Business Performance. She has been training leaders and developing team communication and problem-solving skills for more than 15 years. Earlier in the week, she led a leadership advantage seminar titled “The Leadership Edge Advantage: at NSU that addressed approaches to personnel management situations.

Poirrier said business and personal don’t mix and advocates promoting a team culture at work in which everyone participates and everyone is held accountable.

“Be proactive to circumvent the negatives that can happen in an office,” he said. “The team culture is established by the leader down and everyone who has a stake in building the culture. When you see something that is wrong, you stop it. It’s being part of the team.”

Poirrier founded Poirrier Group, LLC, in 2015, a specialty, high risk, commercial insurance agency, where he serves as president and CEO. At Poirrier Group, “Team Poirrier” focuses on writing complex commercial accounts and insuring the assets and liabilities of high net worth individuals.

The J. Walter Porter Forum is sponsored annually through NSU’s School of Business. The forum is made possible by the endowment established by the family and friends of the late J. Walter Porter in recognition of his interest in improving the image of business as a career field for college students and of his concern for moral and ethical standards as expressed in his philosophy of business. The forum is an effort to translate the textbook into practice by bringing capable, successful business executives to the campus to speak on selected topics in their area of expertise.

SGA will host ‘Hidden Figures’ author Nov. 5

SGA Speaker

Northwestern State University’s Student Government Association will host an evening with Margot Lee Shettery, author of the book that inspired the film “Hidden Figures.”
Shettery will speak Monday, November 5 at 6:15 p.m. in A.A. Fredericks Auditorium on the NSU campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Shettery is an American non-fiction writer who has also worked in investment banking and media startups. Her first book, “Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race,” is about African-American women mathematicians working at NASA who were instrumental to the success of the United States space program. She sold the movie rights while still working on the book, and it was adapted as a feature film of the same name.

For several years Shetterly and her husband lived and worked in Mexico, where they founded and published Inside Mexico, a magazine directed to English-speaking expats.

“NSU’s SGA sponsors a regular speakers’ series, bringing guests to campus throughout the year to give students a chance to experience different points of view and inspirational messages,” said SGA President Jacob Ellis of Athens. “We invite people to come out to hear this message and feel inspired by this amazing story.”

Cross Country-Men and women both take 10th at Southland Conference Championship

BrandonLewis-Graham

The Northwestern State cross country teams capped their schedule Friday morning at the 2018 Southland Conference Championships with both teams improving on last season’s results, each placing 10th among 13 teams.

The Lady Demons were paced by sophomore Isabella Hudson while senior Brandon Lewis-Graham was fastest for the Demons in the competition on a muddy course at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex. They were the first finishers for their teams in every meet of the season.

Hudson had a tremendous improvement from her freshman year, leading the Lady Demons with a time of 25:14.1 in the 6,000 meter run, earning the 34th overall slot among 92 competitors after finishing 76th a season ago. Lewis-Graham paced the NSU men with a 41st-place finish over 8,000 meters with a time of 28:43.4 in the 88-runner field.

Hudson was followed by freshman teammate Emily Blanchard, who ran 25:30.7 for 40th.

“Isabella and Emily ran so far beyond where they should have been,” said head coach Chris Sauer. “I was going to be pleased if they were both around 50th. To get Izzy and Emmy in the top 40 is incredible. They’ve both improved so much this season and I couldn’t ask for more.”

Sauer said that he had hoped for a better showing on the men’s side but was still happy with his lone senior, Lewis-Graham.

“I’m always going to be proud of how Brandon led this team this year,” said Sauer. “He’s the only senior and he stepped up big in mentoring this young team. He and I both looked at this race thinking top 15 was possible, but a bad start on this course with these conditions is unforgiving.”

Close behind Hudson and Blanchard on the women’s side were freshman Kirstin Elrod (55th- 26:29.9), trailed on the scorecard by junior Emily Heard (69th- 27:10.2) and freshman Jasmine Dansby (76th- 27:52.7).

“For the girls, 10th was a good result. Last year they finished 11th and did it with four seniors, two juniors, and two freshmen. This year we placed even higher with one junior, two sophomores, and five freshmen,” said Sauer. “Two of them placed higher than any individual from NSU on the women’s side has in years. They got out where they needed to be and just held people off the whole time.”

Following Lewis-Graham across the finish line for the Demons were sophomore Darius Groves (49th- 29:06.3), sophomore Yannik Gerland (52nd- 29:13.1), freshman Cody Robinson (53rd- 29:15.6), and freshman Clay Casner (67th- 30:10.9).

“Honestly, the guys had a bad day,” said Sauer. “We started out further back than we should have been. In these conditions, there was no chance to change enough to make up for it. The younger guys got some much-needed experience, but it stings to have the bad days fall when it really matters.”

The freshmen quartet of Jade Talazac (79th- 28:03.7), Keanna Osby (80th- 28:11.2), Thomas Daigle (71st- 30:27.2), and Andrew Robinson (84th- 32:33.1) also competed but did not score points.

Lamar, the reigning men’s champion of the past five years, was knocked off by Central Arkansas with a team score of 57. The Cardinals took second with 64 points despite having the top two individual finishers. The women also crowned a new team champion as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won its first title since 2011.

The NCAA South Central Regionals are open to anyone and Sauer may bring a couple of runners to College Station, Texas on Nov. 9. The others will turn their attention to the upcoming track season to compete in distance events beginning in January with indoor meets.

2018 Pumpkin Glow Starts Halloween Off With a Bang

By Kevin Shannahan

Pumpkin Glow 2018 (5)

Kevin’s Gallery

The Natchitoches downtown riverbank was packed with families celebrating the 2018 Pumpkin Glow sponsored by the Historic District Business Association (HDBA). The popular family friendly event is in its 6th year and has become an integral part of the local fall scene. The stage area featured decorated pumpkins from 44 contestants vying for top honors.

A dance group from the Council on Aging started the evening’s program, showing off their moves to the crowd. They were followed by some of the finest musicians to be found in the parish. The NSU Middle Lab and NCHS orchestras played a variety of pieces for the appreciative audience. The Middle Lab orchestra will be traveling to play at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in March. While this is the Middle Lab Orchestra’s first trip to Carnegie Hall, the NCHS orchestra has played there several times over the past few years as well as in Europe. The orchestras have set a remarkable record of excellence and are a group of young people of whom we can all be proud. The evening’s entertainment was brought to a conclusion by several local dance and gymnastic teams who danced and performed for an eager audience.

The NSU Middle Lab Orchestra needs our help to raise the funds needed to send the students and chaperons to Carnegie Hall. Anyone who wishes to donate any amount may do so by stopping by the NSU Middle Lab School. The Natchitoches Parish Journal is donating the event photography. The album is open and anyone may download any photos they wish. If you do see a photograph you like, please donate to the Middle Lab orchestra’s trip in lieu of payment.

City honors new set of Natchitoches Treasures

Treasures NEW.png
Six residents were recognized as Natchitoches Treasures by the City on Oct. 25. The inductees were Dr. Robert Alost, Irene Johnson, Former Senator Don Kelly, Juanita Murphy, Hyland Packard and Ed Ward Jr.

Louie Bernard was the master of ceremonies for the event. He introduced each treasure and spoke on their involvement in the Natchitoches community and their selfless volunteering and dedication that got them nominated as a treasure.

“I’ve enjoyed Natchitoches more than you can imagine,” said Robert Alost.

Don Kelly endorsed Bernard as the next state senator for the Natchitoches area before telling everyone what a privilege and honor it is for him to receive such an honor as a “Natchitoches Treasure” title. “This is one of the finest towns I’ve ever seen in any state,” he said proudly.

Since 2008 when former mayor Wayne McCullen first envisioned the Natchitoches Treasures program, a group of individuals is inducted yearly in recognition of their work within the community

Demons’ 1988, ’98 championship teams to reunite this weekend

1988 Reunion
Members of the two most successful football teams in modern-day Northwestern State history, the Southland Conference champion 1988 and 1998 squads, are reuniting at their alma mater this weekend during Homecoming festivities.

Both teams were coached by Sam Goodwin, who will join the celebration Saturday. Dozens of team members and staff are expected to participate, said Mike Jaworski, NSU Athletics director of development and engagement.

The 1988 Demons (10-3) won NSU’s first Southland football title, upsetting two No. 1-ranked opponents, North Texas and Stephen F. Austin, on the road to finish unbeaten (6-0) in the league. Nicknamed “The Road Warriors,” the Demons won a first-round playoff game 22-13 at Boise State and fell 38-30 in the FCS quarterfinals a week later at Idaho.

That NSU team finished with a No. 8 national ranking and set school single-season records for points, touchdowns and rushing yards.

The 1998 team (11-3) matched the most wins in school history (also in 1939) and reached the FCS semifinals, hosting three playoff games in Turpin Stadium with a No. 2 ranking and finishing at No. 3 That squad set or tied 20 school records, including breaking the 1988 single-season scoring record.

The Demons swept in-state rivals Southern, UL Lafayette, McNeese and Nicholls, knocking the Cowboys from their No. 1 national ranking in a mid-season thriller at Turpin Stadium before beating Illinois State (48-28) and Appalachian State (31-20) in the playoffs before eventual national champion Massachusetts rallied for a 41-31 semifinal win.

Reunion festivities begin with check in at 4:30 Friday afternoon at the Collins Family Pavilion at the south end of the football practice field south of Turpin Stadium in the Donald’s Demon Alley tailgating area. The Demon alumni will join members of this year’s NSU team and head coach Brad Laird riding in the homecoming parade, which will wind up at the downtown riverbank stage for a pep rally, where the 1988 and 1998 teams will be spotlighted.

A reunion party, catered by The Landing Restaurant, will be held at the Chateau St. Denis Hotel beginning at 7 Friday evening.

Team members will be honored guests Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 o’clock at the N-Club tents in Donald’s Demon Alley. The squads will be recognized on the field at Turpin Stadium Saturday evening before kickoff of the 6 p.m. game between NSU and Houston Baptist.

Among Saturday’s highlights will be the N-Club Hall of Fame induction ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. in Prather Coliseum, when stars from both teams will be enshrined.

Mansfield native Floyd Turner, who played with the Saints (1989-93), Colts (1994-95) and Ravens (1996, 1998) during a nine-year NFL career, was one of only two first-team All-Southland selections on the 1988 team. He set the Demons’ career receptions record (105) and finished second all-time in career receiving yards (1,810) in an option-based offense, then caught 281 passes for 3,805 yards and 31 touchdowns in a 114-game NFL career.

Morgan City-Central Catholic product Jermaine Jones, the Southland Player of the Year and All-Louisiana Defensive Player of the Year as a cornerback, will represent the 1998 club. Jones was runner up for the Buck Buchanan Award voted to the top defensive player in the FCS after setting the school record for career (44) and single-season (21) pass breakups and scoring five touchdowns on returns (two interceptions, two punts and a fumble return) as a senior in 1998.

Turner and Jones were both All-America selections and NFL Draft picks, Turner going in the sixth round to the Saints in 1989 and Jones getting picked by the Jets in the fifth round in 1999.

Also earning All-America honors in 1998 was another senior, cornerback Kevin Lewis, who went on to play in the NFL and was inducted in the N-Club Hall of Fame in 2014.

The 1998 team also featured All-America defensive end Robert Daniel, who played in the East-West Shrine Game and in the NFL with Carolina.

Also enshrined in the N-Club Hall of Fame Saturday will be Ed Evans, who was NSU’s head athletic trainer for the 1998 team.
