Four Students to represent LSMSA at All-State Music Conference

LSMSA Students

On Saturday, Oct. 13, several students from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) attended the second round of auditions for the All-State Choir, Orchestra, and State Bands. Four will move on to represent the school at the Louisiana Music Educator’s Association’s (LMEA) All-State Conference in Baton Rouge on Nov. 15-19.

Sydney Sorbet (’20) of Covington will be representing the school as a soprano in the All-State Mixed Choir. Trombonist Jonas Truax (’19) of Denham Springs and violinist Stephen Wheat (’21) of Natchitoches will represent the school in the All-State Orchestra. Saxophonist Andrew Yen (’21) of Lake Charles will represent in the All-State Concert Band.

Students from bands and choirs all across the state auditioned to be selected into the All-State music ensembles. During the auditioning process, students are required to play or sing one designated practice piece and one sight-reading piece in front of a blind panel. Students either submitted a taped audition or attended a double-elimination live audition in Tioga or Lafayette, and they must pass two rounds of auditions in order to be accepted into the ensembles.

Roughly 480 students are accepted among all of the students who auditioned.

The LMEA sponsors six All-State ensembles: Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Mixed Choir, Women’s Chorale, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble. To be eligible for any of the ensembles, a student must be in ninth through 12th grades, enrolled in a Louisiana-accredited high school and must be an active member of that school’s ensemble program. The ensemble director must be a current LMEA member. Students are eligible for membership in only one All-State group.

Chateau St. Denis responds to Sharplin

ChateauStDenis2016

October 18, 2018

Natchitoches Parish Journal

Reference: Dear Natchitoches Taxpayer Article of October 17, 2018

Dear Natchitoches Taxpayer:

We want to thank the Natchitoches CVB Tourism Board and especially Ms. Candice Jeansonne, who stayed at our hotel Chateau St. Denis and noticed the incorrect tax rate, for bringing this matter to the CVB board members and our attention regarding the Chateau St. Denis Hotel not properly charging the correct sales tax rate on the value-added fee. Even though we have passed Natchitoches Parish and City of New Orleans sales tax audits, in which it was ruled that this fee isn’t taxable, it was because of our desire to be a good neighbor and member of the business community that we eventually agreed to collect and remit tax on this fee at the request of Mr. Jerry McWherter effective July 1st, 2018.

Prior to that it was our understanding that this fee wasn’t taxable as proven in the past Natchitoches Parish and City of New Orleans sales tax audits. The value-added fee is nothing more than a bundled charge for non-taxable items hence it was opined that the fee itself wasn’t taxable. However, we agreed to make these changes anyway which we did in our property management system (PMS) effective July 1st, 2018.

Unfortunately, due to incomplete instructions from our PMS technical support team the change only took effect with the state and local tax and not the other applicable taxes. Although we have been under collecting the tax since July 1st, 2018, it has since been fixed in our PMS. We have also agreed to remit the uncollected taxes as of July 1st, 2018 of only $1,500.00 approximately immediately.

Willful and intentional underpayment of taxes is not what happened here. As far as the upcoming opinion from the Louisiana Attorney General, we welcome the opportunity to address with him and the CVB the multiple sales tax audits where this fee was ruled non-taxable. In addition, the Natchitoches Parish Tax Administrator ruled that this tax was prospective in nature; therefore, there are no other monies owed by the Chateau St. Denis Hotel.

We’ve proven that there is no tax evasion in this case so that should not be a factor in the CVB board’s decision about Chris being on the CVB board. In fact, we believe not including the Natchitoches Events Center and Chateau Saint Denis general manager on the board is a disservice to the tax paying populace. Chris Post is one of the most involved individuals in the City as far as promoting tourism marketing, conventions and business meetings. We are required to do this as part of our contract with the City and it is also in the CVB’s mission statement.

Thank you once again for bringing all of this to our attention. Furthermore, in the future if anyone has any other challenges or questions about us, please call a meeting and invite us to an open discussion meeting so we can meet everyone, so we can all have the same agenda in promoting Natchitoches.

The 2018 Boys’ & Girls’ Club’s Celebrity Chef & Waiter Event is a Tremendous Success!

Boys-Girls Club 2018 (3)

Kevin’s Gallery

A crowd of around 75 supporters of our area youth gathered at the Braxton home on Starlight Point for the annual Boys’ & Girls’ Club Celebrity Chef and Waiters event. The popular local tradition, now in its 24th year, featured 10 teams from local restaurants presenting their finest dishes. The attendees could choose from a variety of Louisiana dishes ranging from gumbo to chicken to crawfish pasta, all in a festive atmosphere. If they did not feel like standing in line, a solution was easily available utilizing four celebrity waiters who stood by to serve the diners. Brad Laird and Mike McConathy, the Northwestern State University football and men’s basketball coaches and their spouses, brought food and drinks to tables in return for tips.

One of the evening’s highlights was a presentation of a $5,000.00 check from the Natchitoches Community Improvement Foundation. Foundation members Ed Ward, Kelvin Porter and Mildred Joseph presented the check to Peggy Braxton and Norwood Jackson of the Natchitoches Boys’ & Girls’ Club. Overall, the event is expected to raise $20,000.00 for this worthy cause.

The Boy’s and Girls’ Club is truly a community-wide endeavor. Nine NSU students work for the club. Athletes and student groups such as Helping Hands contribute time and work for the club. Above all, they provide an example of success that the children can easily relate to and learn from.

The Natchitoches Parish Journal is donating the event photography. You may download any photos you wish. If you do see a photo you like, please consider a donation to the Boys’ and Girl’s Club in lieu of payment.

JoAnna Washington: A leader with a love of family

JoAnna Washington
JoAnna Washington grew up in Opelousas, but she fell in love with Natchitoches in 2001. She came to the City of Lights to attend Northwestern State University where she received a degree in business administration with a minor in management.

She was married a few months before she graduated to Kevin Washington Jr., a Natchitoches native. They have twins: Kaylee and Kevin III.

JoAnna’s journey with City Bank & Trust Company began when she enrolled as a freshman at NSU. City Bank was the first financial institution she was introduced to and she opened her very own checking account with them.

After her graduation, City Bank was the first and only application JoAnna submitted.

“I always knew I wanted to work in the banking industry,” she said. “Since I was little, I was always intrigued by the bank tellers. I loved going with my mother to cash her checks and then I’d help her count out the money.”

JoAnna started working as a teller at City Bank in 2006. She moved up to head teller before working as an identity theft coordinator and was later promoted to Branch Administrator, Loan Officer and Assistant VP at the University Branch.

As branch administrator for the past 6 years, JoAnna feels blessed and privileged that City Bank thought she was worthy of having the title.

“It’s really rewarding,” she said. “Leading, inspiring, motivating.”

Recently, in April, JoAnna earned her master’s in business administration with a minor in leadership. She said she couldn’t have done this without determination and a good support system, both at home and where she works.

“It was God first,” she said. “My family was always there for me. My children were my biggest cheerleaders, and of course the team at City Bank had my back.”

JoAnna enjoys her work leading and motivating all the tellers on the front line. She enjoys helping others grow and reach their goals in life.

“Just because you’re a leader, doesn’t mean you’re superior,” said JoAnna. “Every new hire I train is different. I respect their individuality and find what’s important for each one so I can bring out the best in them. I promote teamwork because that’s what brings out the best in the bank.”

Most of all, JoAnna loves how family oriented City Bank is. JoAnna loves her bank family just as much as the Natchitoches community it serves.

City Bank was established in Natchitoches in 1933 and has been an integral part of this historic community for over 85 years. The City Bank family constantly strives for excellence and we pride ourselves on the personal services we offer to all of our customers. As a City Bank customer, you will benefit from a full range of services including internet banking, mobile banking, bill pay, Visa debit cards, Access 24, as well as a variety of consumer, commercial and residential mortgage loans.

Letter to the Editor: Tombstones Vote

letters to the editor295

As published in the Natchitoches Times Weekend edition October 20-21, 2018, and the Natchitoches Parish Journal (NPJ), dated 10-19-18 concerning a meeting to be held by the members to elect new officers and board of directors, of the Marthaville Cemetery, Inc., the meeting was held and by all accounts the attendance of over 60 members, it was the largest attended meeting for the cemetery in many years.

Everyone greeted each other with smiles, hand shakes and hugs and visited until the flow of cars and trucks found a place to park on a wet, Louisiana foggy Saturday morning, when most men, women and youngsters of the area were on their deer stands.

Everyone that is members, signed in with their name, their relative’s name that is buried in the cemetery, and that relationship. After everyone was signed in, a Ms Verity Bell, an attorney and member of the Louisiana Bar Association, announced that she had reviewed the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws and had been requested to moderate today’s election meeting according to Roberts Rules Of Order. She call the meeting to order with no objections and stated that the only item on the printed agenda that would be discussed today is to elect all new officers and board of directors as voted unanimously by the membership at the annual meeting, June 2, 2018.

With that, she opened nominations for President, then continued after each office until the following results were voted on and confirmed:

Patty Berry Weeks — President
Carolyn Sue Roe — Secretary/Treasurer
John Rawls — Board Member, Term expires June 2021

Candlelight vigil Thursday at 7 honoring late NSU star Daeshon Gordon

3-30 Daeshon Gordon (1)
The public is invited to attend a candlelight vigil Thursday night at 7 at Northwestern State’s Walter P. Ledet Track Complex to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of 2017-18 Lady Demons track star Daeshon Gordon, who died suddenly Sunday morning.

NSU president Dr. Chris Maggio and athletics director Greg Burke, along with coaches and teammates, will share reflections on Gordon, 22, a native of Jamaica who resided with her parents in Pompano Beach, Florida.

She completed her collegiate eligibility in June, earning honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 meter hurdles and the 4×100 meter relay, at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and was in Natchitoches working toward earning her NSU degree in communications.

Ending Thursday’s candlelight vigil, following remarks about Gordon, the NSU track and field student-athletes and coaches will lead all participants in a ceremonial victory lap around the oval at the Ledet Complex, with hurdles adorned with black ribbons occupying the inside lane.

Gordon was a two-time All-America hurdler at LSU who transferred to Northwestern State and starred for the Lady Demons in the last two seasons. She won four Southland Conference hurdles championships indoors and outdoors and also ran on a Southland champion 4×100 meter relay team as a senior.

She earned two honorable mention All-America honors in June at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, in the 100 meter hurdles and in the 4×100 meter relay, in her final competition for NSU. It was the first time the Lady Demons qualified a relay team for the national meet, which includes the top 24 performers from around the country.

Gordon set the Lady Demons’ school record in the 100 hurdles with a 13.04 time in the NCAA semifinals. She broke the school 60 meter hurdles record indoors in February, clocking 8.15, also a Southland Conference record. She swept the 60 hurdles titles at the Southland Indoor championships in her two seasons at NSU and had the seven fastest times in the event in school history.

She was runner-up for High Point Scorer honors at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships in May, scoring 22.5 points by sweeping the 100 and 400 hurdles titles and running the lead leg on the winning 4×100 relay team.

Gordon was the 2017 Southland Conference Indoor Women’s Newcomer of the Year.

“Daeshon was very energetic, very bubbly, an infectious smile,” said NSU head track and field coach Mike Heimerman. “She was always a joy to be around. She was very considerate. She had a huge heart, and was just an awesome, awesome young lady.

“As a competitor, she was ferocious. Once the gun popped, she was like another person. She loved to compete for her teammates, not so much for herself, but for them. She always wanted to help everybody.”

At LSU, she earned a pair of All-America awards as a freshman in 2015 in the 100 meter hurdles and in 2016 indoors in the 60 meter hurdles. Her 8.04 mark as a sophomore in the 60 hurdles ranks seventh in LSU history and her 57.24 in the 400 hurdles in her freshman season was 10th on the Tigers’ all-time list.

Gordon was a bronze medalist for Jamaica in the 2015 Pam Am Junior Games in the 100 meter hurdles, setting a national age-group record. She was hoping to challenge for a place on her native country’s 2020 Olympic team. She was the top-ranked prep hurdler in Florida in 2014.

She is survived by her parents, Miranda and Deron Gordon of Pompano Beach. A funeral is tentatively planned early next month in the Miami area.

A GoFundMe.com account (https://www.gofundme.com/daeshon-gordon-funeral-expenses) has been established by friends of the family to assist with expenses related to the funeral.

Live Music will be provided by DJ Sarpy from Wrinkle Free Entertainment. We’ll have a selfie booth, vendors, jumps and obstacles for the kids, the NSU Marketplace, and lawn games! Other amenities include fun jumps, and our famous pack and play. We’ll also be joined with the Faculty and Staff Tailgate…join us!
